The basic principle underlying the Double Paper Mysteries is really quite simple, yet can be applied in a variety of ways to create countless effects.

I find it works best when incorporated secretly into items an audience readily recognizes and accepts as innocent, and you'll see how I do just that.

First, Dan will show you the original construction of a magical paper cone that allows you to produce or vanish small objects, but then he teaches how to construct a much less suspicious-looking alternative. In fact, he will show you a few different variations, and use one of them for a funny bit of business with a handkerchief that stubbornly refuses to co-operate until it eventually finds it way into a sealed bag held by your helper.

Using yet another variation, Dan will teach you how to quickly make a fun and tasty snack for everyone in your audience.

He'll even show you a fancier version of the paper cone that does twice the work of the original. And Dan tips his self-sealing version that allows you to perform a comedy cut-and-restored handkerchief routine that turns your audience volunteer into the star of the show.

Then, Dan teaches another helper how to find a card with a piece of string, but things take a comic twist as he finds all the cards except the selected one.

Next, when we look at yet another paper cone, Dan shows you a few ways to implement it in a fun, seasonal routine.

Now, for something a bit more practical, Dan makes a borrowed driver's license instantly appear in a sealed envelope that's been in view the whole time.

Then, Dan uses a simple coin vanish and re-appearance to introduce you to the real inspiration behind the character of Ebeneezer Scrooge.

And finally, things get really hot as Dan causes a coin to penetrate through the solid metal lid of a canning jar.

So, get ready for a little arts and crafts as Dan shows you how to create clever utility devices out of simple pieces of paper.

Eh... Basically a tutorial on how to gimmick some paper things. The performances are nothing great, nothing I'd use. It's fairly obvious to many adult spectators what is going on here. It's a well produced video and tutorial, but it's really just a bunch of arts and crafts you'll never use.

Great Update Report this review

Another great set of effects from Tarbell updated for the 21st century. Most of the effects I probably won't use, but one that does a cut and restored handkerchief is one I am strongly considering. Dan Harlan is doing an awesome job updating Tarbell, trick by trick, and I would have given this 5 stars if it wasn't so long of a session.

Harlan 22 Double Paper Mysteries Report this review

Absolutely superb practical tips and effects based on classic methods of construction etc. but which, in many cases, are taken one step further. Heartily recommended! For a magician that, like myself, enjoys making his or her own props, this is excellent stuff.

Great updates to the material Report this review

I love how Dan Harlan was able to update the material and give us alternate presentations so that you can see how versatile the double paper principle is.

My favorite is effect has to be when Dan Harlan makes a license vanish under the guise of a card trick and make it appear in a sealed envelope. Very good effect!

Much more useful than I thought Report this review

From such a simple concept actually came many great ideas. It's often hard to disentangle the improvements that Dan Harlan makes from the original Tarbell, but in the end the effects become more practical and more magical.

I was fooled a number of times, and Dan assembled complete, entertaining routines.

Tarbell would be Proud Report this review

Dan Harlan does Tarbell proud in this video series. His instructions are clear and he encourages the viewer to come up with their own uses for the gimmicks/moves. This is classic Tarbell, modernized. Thank you so much.

A lot of gems Report this review

Dan Harlan does a really good job modernizing something that, while really clever, is outdated, and he manages to make convincing double paper mysteries out of ordinary objects. My favorite Tarbell lesson by far.

Solid Material Report this review

Good, dependable material. The Acme Coin Vanishing Paper alone is worth the price of the lesson. A nice little coin vanish with no sleights, do it surrounded, under any circumstances.
