"Mark is somebody who I want to keep secret from the world but at the same time tell everybody about. I'm blessed to be somebody who he's willing to share his secrets and ideas with and lucky are those who get the same privilege. I'm his biggest fan."  - Daniel Madison

"Mark is an 'in-your-face' force of nature, thoroughly unafraid to challenge magic's conventional wisdom. His performances constantly remind me that personality is at the heart of entertainment." - Atlas Brookings

"I always enjoy seeing Mark's work. He is someone who always pulls out a gem or two when you least expect it."  - Alan Rorrison

“Every time I see Mark he has something new to blow me away. A very creative thinker with the hands to match.” - Doug McKenzie

What will he teach?

Rubik’s Revenge This is a great opener for MC’s and any stand up or cabaret setting! The Magician explains how to solve the rubik’s cube and claims to hold the record for solving the cube behind his back. A hilarious piece with a kicker ending!

Cyrano This is something Mark has been holding close to the chest for a long time and closes his stand up show with this piece! Two spectators (complete strangers) come up with their respective smart phones and begin to text each other back and forth. The magician proceeds to read the mind of one spectator and writes down what each text says. No preshow! No Stooges!

No Dice This is a utility device to secretly force a number to a spectator that can be used for a plethora of effects. Russian Roulette, Bank Night... the possibilities are endless!

Blow A card is chosen and placed into the deck. The magician spreads the deck across the table and blows at the spread and ONE card flutters out and across the table. It's the spectator’s card! This is extremely visual!

Potato This is a unique mental effect where the magician writes down something on a piece of paper that is crumbled up into a ball. The magician sets a timer on his phone and the ball is passed back and forth amongst the group like a game of hot potato. When the phone alarm buzzes, the spectator with the paper opens up to find that the magician predicted EXACTLY who would have the ball at the end of the timer! The magician never touches the phone after the timer is set!

NLL This is an interesting concept for the close-up table that allows you to do some amazing color changes and switches with cards. Imagine the ability to lap without needing your lap!

Mark will also go over his work on invisible loops, unpublished work on “DVS/THE SEER”, memorized deck ideas and some other great close up ideas.

Some clever thinking, but bad performing habits Report this review

While Mark has produced some interesting ideas, I found this lecture obnoxious. I don't know if he performs professionally but his treatment of spectators and the audience at large borders on disrespectful on more than one occasion. I caution any performers who watch this to consider the experience you want to create for your audience when performing, and avoid making yourself the star of the show. It's very unbecoming.

Great ideas but not great lecture Report this review

I vacillated between awarding 3 or 4 stars on this one. First, this is not meant as a slam, but is meant to indicate only how much I personally enjoyed the lecture. Mr. Calabrese is not a teacher, he is a performer. That is obvious. But it takes away from the lecture. I got the sense that his lecture was presented in the same manner that he presents his magic. By this, I mean that he does, in fact, tip the methods to his work. He is not, however, an excellent or even above average teacher. Nonetheless, he is creative, and his IDEAS are good. But, again, his ideas are not methodically taught. He speaks in a fast paced style that is sometimes hard to follow, from the perspective of a teacher/student scenario. Of course, you have available to you the "rewind" feature on these lectures, so you can go back and revisit any detail that he articulates or demonstrates. In short, I am sure Mr. Calabrese could fool me or a layman with his tricks. And if that is all you are looking for, this is the right lecture for you. If, however, you are looking for an organized and methodical teacher who put some time into creating a presentation to facilitate efficient learning by those watching this lecture … well, then you will probably find that this lecture is a 3-star lecture like I did. Nonetheless, I am interested in seeing more of Mr. Calabrese's work in the future.

Penguin LIEve Lecture Report this review

One star to Penguin
Five stars to Mark Calabrese and Dan Harlan for the great lecture !

When Penguin began with this kind of product (live lectures), we were allowed to ask questions.

Some lectures were not live because the magicians couldn´t be in the Penguin Studios. So, no problem in this case. These were the case of the MacKing, Juan Tamariz and the Mystery School lectures for example.

But, Penguin changed the product. Now, all the lectures are live only for whom is present on the Penguin Studios. They are no Live anymore. All the lectures now are pre filmed !!!
If you can´t go there, you can´t ask questions anymore ! So, if you don´t live in Ohio, this product is not Live for you !!!

As David Roth told us in his lecture, the difference of a lecture and a DVD is that you can ask during the lecture ! And we are not allowed to do this anymore :( !!!

Penguin should tell this clearly on his site. Selling a pre filmed lecture as a live lecture is not right with the subscribers of the product.

Please, don´t answer this post telling me that I can unsubcribe anytime I want. What I want is the old product, where we were allowed to ask questions live.

Best Regards,

Me

p.s. I already sent twitters, emails and tried to communicate with Penguin. Until now, no reply was sent to me. So, this is the way that I have to expose the problem !

So, let´s talk about the lecture:

Rubik's Revenge (4/5) - great trick that uses 2 rubiks cube. The routine is very good. Got 4 or 5 because in one part of the trick, he uses a technique from other magician that he couldn´t explain. He said lots of products that can be used, but unfortunately he didn´t explain a way of
doing one part of the routine. Despite that, if you have one of the products he suggested and likes the Rubik Cube, this is a great routine !

Cyrano (4/5) - great routine. The method is ingenious. Very good ! Got 4 of 5 because in the beginning, he showed a way of "revealing" a passcode of a phone and didn´t expalined how to do that. He told us where we could learn it but, as not being something from him, he couldn´t explain. But, this part is not necessary for doing the trick !!! Even without this little detail, the routine is very well constructed and the method is very very good !!! The method has a new way of doing something that mentalists do a lot ! But, in Cyrano, the method is really improved (in my humble opinion).

No Dice (5/5) - This alone worths all the lecture price ! Guys, this method can be used in lot's of situations where you need to force a number !!! Awesome !

Blow (3/5) - This is something that is not new for us magicians. Despite that, it's a great trick.

Potato (5/5) - Again, Mr. Calabrese came with something very well thought ! The routine is OK, but the principle can be used in lot's of things ! Your imagination is the limit ! Really liked this !

On resume, now that the lecture has already been filmed, this is a very good product ! Very recommended !!!

Eclectic Mix of Great Magic! Report this review
Pro Privacy ON (login to see reviewer names) on June 23rd, 2016
Mark Calabrese provided an eclectic mix of workable stand-up and close-up magic. The great thing about many of the items he teaches is that the principles that are explained can be applied to more than the effects that are taught. There was cell phone based mentalism (Cyrano & Potato) for those that want to take advantage of 21st century techniques for appearing to read minds. By the way… I saw Mark use these techniques at a local charity event that I attended and they got great audience reaction. The No Dice effect will tip a method that again can be applied to other dice based effects. Blow provided a cool take on animating a card. The NLL already has me thinking of alternate ways to use that technique since angles often hamper my ability to use a traditional lapping approach. I had bought his DVS DVD & ’special something’ several years ago and he shared some new approaches using it as well as how to obtain some ‘special something’ at a local Walmart or Walgreen’s in a pinch. If you are looking for an interesting mix of magical thinking, then this might be the download for you!

His personality comedy is just fine. The magic is good, but not as outstanding as a number of other lecturers. Still worth 4 stars. There were a couple standout effects, two with loops and one his method, which is broadly applicable, for a Tom Stone trick

Mark Calabrese performs for real people in a variety of situations. His work is time-tested and authentically fooling. Pay attention to the nuances he teaches, too, as he leaves nothing out.
