CARD MAGIC STEPS TO THE STAGE
Books devoted to card magic number in the thousands, and those books have offered hundreds of thousands of card tricks, most of them designed for the close-up magician. But what about the magician who wishes to perform for larger audiences and higher fees? Card tricks suitable for parlor, platform and stage are far fewer, and finding them requires searching through the countless books in which they are scattered. Magicians wishing to perform with cards for more than a few people have never been given a compact and authoritative source of information and tricks—until now. Standup Card Magic is the first book devoted to teaching the tools, tricks and routines necessary for entertaining and amazing banquet, corporate, trade-show and theater audiences. All this is taught through the eyes and experience of a world-class magician and teacher. Roberto Giobbi shows you how to performstandup—and outstanding—card magic!
Roberto Giobbi is the award-winning and internationally respected author of Card College, The Art of Switching Decks, Secret Agenda, Confidences and other foundational works on card magic. In Standup Card Magic Giobbi has focused on the psychology, showmanship, spectator management, sleights, tricks and presentations designed for standup performance before larger audiences.
Giobbi begins by exploring what standup card magic is and how it differs from close-up magic. From there he teaches how to interact with a larger group of spectators, how to choose the right people to assist you, how to get them onto the stage and how to manage their behavior there. He then provides a meaty discussion of the right sleights to use in standup and stage performances. Following this are detailed explanations of many of his beststandup card routines.
All the material is taken from Giobbi’s professional repertoire, honed over many years of performances in front of international audiences. Card magicians who wish to perform powerful card magic for larger groups finally have a book that addresses their needs. Standup Card Magic not only provides the tools, magic and presentational guidelines, it also shows its readers how to develop further standup card magic, where to find it and how to bring cardtricks from the close-up table onto the stage. Standup Card Magic is a comprehensive study of professional-caliber, standup card conjuring, and is designed to show you how to take your card magic to new levels and larger audiences.

I have been a Giobbi fan for quite some time. I have taken a three-day workshop with him; a half-day on Vernon; and read everything he has published in English. I bought this as soon as it was available. As I expected I was not disappointed. I devoured it in two days for the first (of what will be many) readings.
I have spent my life teaching and learning from great teachers. Giobbi is the finest teacher of card magic on the planet. This book is worth many times the price. It is not just a few tricks "made larger" and called stand-up. It is a complete course in stand-up card magic. From the theory to the moves, to the actual pieces, this is a carefully crafted work that fans have come to expect from Roberto.
If you do stand-up magic, even if it is not card magic, you owe it to yourself to buy, study, learn from, and treasure this book.
I cannot recommend it more highly.

I'm a beginner at card magic but I want to be able to do standup card magic in front of a room rather than at a table. Most of the routines are above my current skill level, but I feel with practice I'll be able to do them. The book is well illustrated with photos and is well written. However the details of how to do the actual moves themselves are often referred to in Giobbi's other books, the Card College series. It would be nice in Penguin offered a bundle of both books at some package price for people like me who don't already have the Card College series.
By FAR, the best book Giobbi's ever written!!! Report this review

This book was long needed.Close up magicians like myself who are good in their craft up close, but wanted a way to create a big stage presence without the stage props WILL find their answer here. I read the other reviews. Yes, the patter may not suit you, but Giobbi continually mentions to change the patter to suit your style. The words given are a framework so you can understand the concept of the trick. Once understood, change it to personalize it for yourself. (I think we can ALL name that one magician we know who performs and quotes word for word of other people's tricks, ha)
My personal humor was how often he mentioned Juan TamArizona in the book.
Giobbi, as per the title, this is your best work to date. You saved my butt for an upcoming stage show. I owe ya buddy.

Spent an hour with this one last night. I wanted to like it (I like books...) but just can't recommend it.
There's a lot of obvious stuff here, and the tricks aren't particularly new, unique or noteworthy. Most jarring was how dated the patter was... it doesn't sound at all like the modern approach that Penguin helped spread.
Roberto clearly means well, he worked hard on polishing this, and my guess is that he's a great performer. But, meh.
I don't think you need help learning how to milk the audience for applause.
