What will he teach?

Royal Hold’em Trick - This is a great opener that will cause the prettiest lady to want to take you and run off to Vegas. A deck is shuffled by performer. Five random numbers are selected by the spectators and the performer counts off the number of cards into five separate piles. On the top pile is a full house aces over kings and on the bottom is a straight flush in hearts. The cards are washed and gathered together in a very hap hazard manner and casino shuffled. The performer asks the prettiest lady to use her female intuition to pick the winning position. The performer deals out 5 hands of Hold'em and there is 5 pat hands starting with a "flush, full house, 4 of a kind, a straight flush, and in the chosen position is a "Royal Flush in spades."

Double Switch - Two cards are selected and shuffled back into the deck. The first card is shown very haphazardly and naturally definitely not a double then turned down and spectator two places their finger on it. The second card is displayed again definitely not a double turned facedown and one-handedly flicked to spectator one. So right now spectator two is holding spectator one’s card and spectator one has the wrong card. The cards are revealed and they are correct. (NO DOUBLE LIFTS)

Middle Deal Mod- Spectator one shuffles the deck then deals three hands of five card draw. The spectator is instructed to deal all the performer’s cards from anywhere in the middle and at the showdown the performer is holding four-of-a-kind.

More performance than instruction Report this review

(sigh) I get it. RT is blind and he has an incredible rep. As John Dewey in 'Art as Experience' states regarding great works of art , "the prestige they possess because of a long history of unquestioned admiration, creates conventions that get in the way of fresh insight," and "...is remitted to a separate realm."
RT is more performer or demonstrator than instructor, hence the two stars. I think when one becomes so highly unconsciously competent, they become so far removed from the practice that led them to such high proficiency, that they easily gloss over the details and nuances they now implement with ease. If it wasn't for Dan Harlan asking RT to hold his hands up or getting an overshot, there wouldn't be much takeaway here. As it is, you'll have to slow down these moments to see what RT REALLY does versus what he says he does.
Bottom dealing and second dealing are not difficult. They are mechanics. Just like learning to swing a golf club. Anyone can do it. It's the ten thousand hours of practice that makes someone good at it. When you first attempt to learn a skill, you're not doing it, you're teaching your body to perform in a new way to the point where you become unconscious of it, like learning to ride a bike or do free throws. Those basic mechanics are what you should learn from instructional material. The rest is you practicing, adjusting, learning, and repeating.
I also believe that because of RT's incredibly developed sensitivity to touch, there are things he may be unable and/or unaware to communicate to a sighted audience. On the other hand, as an instructor, he should be able to communicate what makes his approach different asthis as that's what the viewer has paid to learn.
The bottom line is, if a instructional video, book, live lecture doesn't easily instruct or inform it's paying audience and that they're unable to walk away with what it's purporting to sell, then it's a failure.
I know I'll get a lot of flack from the community, because they hold RT with such deserved high esteem, and wish to rescue him from even the slightest taint to his reputation, but just compare this item to any of the better instructional items you have and judge it on that basis alone.

Great work, but advanced! Report this review

I thoroughly enjoyed this video. In fact, it's easily my new favourite! Turner is clearly exceptionally talented, and if nothing else it was incredibly inspiring to see his presentation! He's probably the cleanest working card magician I've ever seen.

A word of warning: everything he does is extremely advanced, in my beginner opinion. He covers bottom deals and second deals and false shuffles a bit, but I can't even come close to his level of skill in making them look good.

He also assumes a fairly high level of skill, and doesn't cover some of the stuff he shows, citing it as "too advanced". While I totally agree, it's somewhat annoying to be shown a trick, then only to be shown part of the method.

But, don't let any of that stop you! As I opened with, this man is pure talent, and I have something new to aspire to now. :)

The greatest card mechanic Report this review

I was Richard's spectator in one of his shows at the IBM/SAM Combined convention in 2014 while his producers were filming for the DEALT movie, it was the best experience I have had. I shuffled his cards too many times and he still was able to deal the aces (or royal flush) at the named position from the named number of players!

Richard is a MONSTER with a deck of cards, even if you can not do what he can (I think 98% of us can not do what he can like him), he truly is an inspiration. Can't wait for the movie DEALT

I can understand why this has a few low ratings, but this needs context... Report this review

OK, so we all know that Mr Turner is astonishing. Not only astonishing, but quite probably the best mechanic in history. His skills are of course not in question.

But if you're new to card table work or if you're a magician wanting to do gambling demos then although this will be helpful, you need to understand that you will need to put in A LOT of work before performing anything seen here.

Gambling work is literally all I do, I don't have any real interest in doing card magic or cardistry or anything other than gambling routines, so this was tremendously useful to me. I've studied RT for years, and seen absolutely everything that he's commited to film multiple times, much of my own act is comprised of things inspired by him. So it was really great to see a few effects that I've never seen him do before, and learn the methods.

If your seconds, bottoms and false table shuffles are passable then you'll benefit greatly from the subtleties and nuances that Mr Turner offers here, and will probably be able to perform the effects taught with relative ease (albeit not as flawlessly or invisibly as RT).

He's perhaps not the most natural teacher, but anyone who has put in the work on their card table technique will be able to follow very easily and will benefit massively.

Just days before watching this I was sat in front of my 3-way racking my brains about how to improve my push through and lo-and-behold, halfway into this was the perfect solution.

But the bottom line is that we are all privileged to be able to watch a true master like RT, the talent of whom we won't witness again in our lifetimes, perform and entertain. This is an absolute bargain even if just to observe and admire.

Thank you, sincerely, to Penguin Magic for making this available.

You Can’t Go Wrong! Report this review

First I am a big fan of Richard Turner. Everything from his Dealt documentary film, his performances on Fool Us and Masters of Illusions. I also probably watched every YouTube video of him over the last few years. I got this lecture to see more of him and to see him uncut and to see him teach some of his routines and sleights. It was a wonderful lecture from start to finish. As far as the 3 routines are concerned, if you can effectively deal seconds, bottoms and hold out a group of cards, you’ll really get some mileage out of them. I can’t do the moves and don’t plan on doing them, but I really enjoyed watching him perform and teach it. What you will get out of it is his teaching on the second and bottom deal. If that’s something you want to master. As well as his false table riffle shuffle. I’ve been doing card magic for 15 years and in my opinion Richard taught everything well. And Dan Harlan does a great job making sure everything is covered. In addition he performed his legendary 7 Card Stud routine and had a solid 45 minute Q&A. Overall if you are a fan and want to be inspired and entertained, you can’t go wrong here.

The bottom and second deal are worth $30 by themselves. The moves that he teaches are very hard, but worth practicing. If you want to learn to control the outcome of a card game, you need to buy this to learn from the best.

5 stars. Would you find it useful.. I don’t know, from some point of view of course, it’s obviously almost impossible to achieve such level and I knew it well before this video. For me it was just pleasure to watch Richard explaining his training and performing methods, he is just phenomenal.
And if you are looking for some great technical staff just go for the Jason England videos. Unfortunately it’s only one Jason’s lecture on penguin would be great to have some more..
