This lecture is easily worth ten times the price, and I would have happily paid it. For what Penguin is charging, this is a steal.

I'll say this up front: I'm not a mentalist. I've dabbled in it here and there, but it's just not my character to seem "psychic" or "all-knowing" as a mind-reader. And I've never, ever wanted to bend a fork or a tine for an audience.

And yet this video is enough to make me reconsider... certainly I learned so much.

This video grabs you from beginning to end. It's a long lecture, so I sat down on a Sunday afternoon thinking I'd break this up into an hour here, an hour there over the next few days. Instead, I couldn't turn it off. I watched the whole thing, beginning to end, in one sitting. I can't wait to watch it again and sort out what I want to do with it all!

(How annoyed I was when Dan said "we're outta time!" Come on, Dan! More please! Dan suggests they do a sequel. Sign me up now.)

Banachek proves to be a great teacher, coach and mentor, and is always compelling. He becomes palpably passionate at times, urging us to step up our game. A central theme here is for us to devise our own presentations, effects, and methods, using the "tools" he teaches. He expects of us that we become better professionals; he never once talks down to us but instead treats us as serious craftsmen.

An example: the phone book test. After explaining the method, Banachek moves on to teaching many other effects. Later, he begins a book test using the Holy Bible. As we watch, the savvy viewer senses that this could be done with the exact same method as the phone book...which is precisely the point. The Bible test has some interesting variations in presentation, but it's really the same "tool" that works. Banachek returns to this theme again and again. It should inspire you to find your own way.

He often explains why he performs something in a particular manner, but encourages us to find our own path as performers. (He'll say, "This is what works for me, but it's completely the performer's choice.") Still, he's not above calling out the presentations he has seen in his career that he finds lacking or just plain wrong, and he explains his reasoning.

Perhaps my favorite part of this lecture is the general history of mentalism over the last 40-50 years. He doesn't mention Corinda, nor Annemann. He instead speaks about Uri G, the Amazing Randi, and...um... Peter Popov. Banachek talks at length about his role in Project Alpha, too. It's really interesting stuff.

Lest you say, "But I'm putting my money down to learn secrets..." Trust me, the tricks are all here. The background history is a hugely needed bonus, a boon to scholars of magic/mentalsim and the merely curious. This conversation is just as interesting as the effects taught.

Caveats? Almost all the effects require some sizable audience to work with. Maybe some of this could be adapted for table hopping, but this material is ideally suited for a standard stage or parlor act. A great deal of audience management is required in many of the effects, but Banachek gives ample assistance and guidelines.

Speaking of audience management: Mentalism is an area where things can go wrong very easily. In fact, there are clips of Banachek in performance where things do NOT go the way he wants. (In one case, a spectator looks at the first word on the top of a page in a book, and selects the "wrong" word. Agh!) He explains how to prepare for these things. His casual coolness in keeping up the performance rather than crumbling under pressure is very inspiring. This is what makes a pro a pro, guys. Really valuable stuff.

I could go on and on. This is a long review, but it IS a long lecture. I'll stop writing now so that you can stop reading this and start watching the video!

At the close of the lecture, questioned by Penguin's Dan Harlan, Banacek reveals that as a youth, he "was socially inept" because his parents didn't raise the boy very well. That is part of the beauty of this lecture.

And the strength and humanity that the man reveals to Harlan -- coming right after one mind miracle after another -- shows we can ALL overcome our flaws and afflictions and pursue our dreams.

He has not only mastered the art of mentalism. Despite a flawed upbringing, he has mastered the art of being a warm, likable human being, which makes him an even greater performer. Role model, mentor, ethical performer.

His effects are -- each one -- terrific, even moreso because he employs sublimely simple yet indetectable techniques that we should ALL use.

I was never huge on mentalism..... until I got this lecture! I have been playing with his ideas ever sense I got his lecture(two weeks ago). There is something for everyone, and I know you will enjoy this lecture. This one is my favorite by far! I cannot wait to put this in my shows. I know that all the adults, and kids will love the tricks he taught. I am 13 years old and have been doing magic for 2 years, so take it from me when I say that this is reputation making work with tricks for beginners to advanced. On top of all the tricks he teaches, he also gives you many ideas for other performances that fit your style. You will not be disappointed when buying this lecture. If you love mentalism, and making your own gadgets where you can create your own tricks, this is for sure right for you. And even if you don't like mentalism, trust me when I say that you will after this lecture.

I've purchased well over 100 items and downloads on this site and this may very well be my favorite purchase. Even if you know how many of his effects are accomplished, seeing Banachek perform them and hearing his notes are incredibly insightful. It's fitting that he's written a couple books on psychological subtleties because the subtleties make an otherwise iffy effect something really powerful. You'll not only learn secrets but you will also look at things in ways that you've never thought of before. I honestly believe this lecture will help you in all aspects of your mentalism and magic and you will apply what you've learned to tricks outside the scope of what's covered in the lecture (but for the record what is covered in the lecture is A LOT).

I've loved Banachek for years. However, I have never seen him lecture. This lecture was great and packed full of material. For the price you cannot go wrong as you are getting a ton of value.

Banachek's lecture is Epic! There's a point halfway in, where the entire audience is so amazed at what he's teaching and how he breaks the material down, there's like a good 30 seconds of clapping! Nothing else- just a HUGE applause! Even I while watching the stream, hit the pause button, took a moment and just thought to myself, "Wow, this guy is a genius!" As a magician, who has been involved in the community for some time, I often take pride in my creativity and my knowledge. A lot of things I thought I was doing pretty good, but Banachek takes you by the hand (because that's how it feels) and he demonstrates, then shows how you can get the most out of what you do by taking it further. He's not just showing you how to take it a step further, he's literally ripping apart your performances, then reconstructing not only how you perform, but how you think, how you create routines, and how you actually live up to the hype. We often say we're the masters of this, and we can do that. Banachek shows you how you can be every bit of who you say that you are! If it sounds like I'm rambling, its probably because I am, because no one is supposed to be that good!

Havent watched the whole thing yet but this one is loaded with brilliant ideas, super useful advise, tiny details,tecqnicues and effects, presentation and showmanship. The man is a genius. I greatly recommend it. Banachek rocks!
