Since 1965, Phil Goldstein has published over 1000 ingenious tricks and routines. From this huge body of work he has chosen 60 of his best card tricks, the cream of the bountiful crop. His criteria were clarity of plot, entertainment value, and high magical content. Focus contains all 60 of these choice effects, the very best from one of today's most acclaimed creators.

Among the many excellent tricks in this volume, Mr. Goldstein has finally parted with "Impressions," a routine with which he has baffled the world's leading magicians. A joker transforms itself time after time into a duplicate of any card picked from the deck, including an imaginary card!

This is just one of the 60 astonishing and professional effects explained in Focus, an important work by one of the most extraordinarily creative talents in magic.

One thing that isn't made clear in the description is that these are all packet tricks. This may or may not appeal to you. I'm not a huge fan of these sorts of tricks, because they all seem similar to me... take a few cards, do some sleights and false displays and false counts, convince the spectator they saw something, and then show them something completely different.

Reading one effect after another like this starts to feel very repetitive, but that's just personal bias. Other people might love this stuff, since there are some well-developed routines in here.

One legit complaint is that none of the required sleights are explained. That's ok, if the book is meant for intermediate to advanced card handlers; however, this should be made clear to potential buyers. There is a sleight index in the back of the book, but I'm not sure how that's helpful when it just points you to effects where the sleight is used, but not described.
