The magician places a small wooden box down on the table and asks one of the spectators to help him by naming any city in the world. He says, "It can be a city that you have visited or one that you have only heard of." Let's say the spectator names Paris. After concentrating for a few seconds, the magician then says, "I knew that!" After the groans subside, he explains, "Obviously there is no way that I could know for sure what city you were thinking of, because there are thousands of cities in the world. But I am able to make more simple predictions. Allow me to demonstrate."

He then brings out a deck of cards and a small pad of paper. He writes something on the pad and then tears off the paper, folds it, and places it down on the table, saying, "I have just predicted what is about to occur." He then asks the spectator to cut the deck anywhere he likes and has him turn over the card that he cut to so that everyone can see it. The spectator is then asked to unfold and read the magician's prediction out loud, and it he prediction matches his card! A good trick, but now for the best part..

"You might be wondering what this small wooden box is for. Earlier I wrote something down and put it inside the box." He reaches over with his empty hand and gives the box to the spectator, asking him to remove the lid. Everyone sees a folded piece of paper inside, the magician dumps it out and asks the spectator to unfold and read it. "You were thinking of Paris."
