Who is he?

Vinny has been creating, sharing, and performing magic his entire life. He learned sleight of hand from Bruce Elliot as a teenager in NYC and has been in love with magic ever since. He is the author of multiple DVDs, the inventor of numerous original sleights, and collaborates with magicians from all over the world on his website (www.vinnymarini.com). He performs private shows regularly in the greater Los Angeles area and as well as the Magic Castle in Hollywood.

First off if you are looking for nothing more then routines then this will disappoint you. However, if you are looking for moves / techniques that may set you apart from others then you will be happy with the purchase.

Vinny Marini's lecture may not have been structured or laser focused as other ones that I have watched, but what you will get is a bunch of tools that you can incorporate into your work. These moves are bold, but effective. His card scoop is one of the real gems. Most of the lecture is devoted to cards with the end to coins and some misc items in between.

I really enjoyed his card through handkerchief effect, which used the story of Houdini. The best card effect in my opinion was Scent of a Women. This is one where you have three people pick a card (two men, one woman), have the woman sign her card, all three cards are ripped up and placed into a brown lunch bag. Vinny then finds the signed card by smell. Can be quite funny and a solid effect.

He does his take on the Crimp palm (Thumb Crotch or Fickle Palm) with some moves and a few basic routines. Doing a copper silver effect looked really nice.

Overall others might find the jumping from topic to topic and the lack of full routines to be a turn off, but I enjoyed it. I found lots of little things to work on and just seeing how someone takes prior ideas and makes them their own can be inspiring.

I enjoyed the lecture. There were a lot of unique variations of classic moves for the finger ring and string, a few nice ideas for the 3 shell game, several card moves and coin work...especially helpful if you don't classic palm coins well)

I hope when I'm 79, I have the memory, the energy, the love of magic and the willingness to share that Vinny has.

Vinny's performance style is his own. It may or may not fit your particular style but it's unlikely you won't find some ideas or moves that you'll have fun playing with and you just might find a way to make them your own.

Vinny is not only a very interesting character and seasoned close-up magic performer, he is the creator of some great routines -- very visual, fast paced effects based on many of his ORIGINAL, "not seen before" sleights. In this lecture Vinny demonstrates and explains very "do-able" material that clearly has the potential to fit within the "strong worker" category. His up-front-and-in-your-face style is very effective and the routines are explained very well. Aside from the routines, I really enjoyed his rather bold approach to magic and will definitely make use of many of his sleights taught in this lecture. A well-produced and informative session!

Lots of moves and variations taught Report this review

Lots of effects and moves taught. Too many to definitively describe in this brief post.

That said, I particularly liked "G Wave", the Toss Move, the Scoop Move, the Top Gun Change (a variation of the Erdnase Change), the Glide Palm Move (demonstrated in "Arlene the Psychic Elephant " routine), Vinny's version of the Hop Move and his use of the Han Pien Ching move with cards (in his "Card to Box" effect).

I also liked his hilarious vanish of one of the shells in his 3-shell routine and his described "Marini Pinch" move of the pea. (I'm going to work on that.)

I agree with Dan Harlan that Vinny's style is Vinny (and is not for everyone). However, most of the moves taught can probably be adapted and incorporated into other magicians' style with a little bit of effort and practice.

All in all, a lecture loaded with new moves and variations of old(er) existing moves. Lots of food for thought here.

So every clever sleights of his own. However, his interactions were more than cringe. Yes, he’s an older guy who worked in bars, but dude read the room. Gives magic and magicians a bad name. That said, if you can bear it, some of his own work is clever and would add to your toolbox. 4 for the magic. 2 for his style of performing.
