Can the reveal be done other than with a phone? Say a prediction in a sealed envelope?

Yes, but the phone helps hide the method and provides some motivation for the reveal. People regularly refer to information on their phones, but most people don't carry around predictions in envelopes. But yes, the method would work with a variety of presentations.
