Can Chewboxa's method be used to construct other box changes?

Several reviews stated that the gum box needed for Chewboxa is not available. If that is so, can the method be used to create a color changing box, so that one card box is changed into a different card box AND have cards removed from the different card box? That would make this worthwhile even if the actual intended effect is not possible due to gum packets being unavailable.
