Does "Delusion" require an "assistant"

Can this trick be done by letting a random spectator hold the envelope or does someone have to be in on it?

Either way...can't you use a stooge for almost any trick?
I know...that's not what you mean.
You don't need an assistant as you ask.
However, make note that the presentation of "Delusion" is not totally complete.
Simply, there is "A.N." issue. The use of the A.N. is not needed for what is advertised: The prediction.
However, if you want to take it a 'natural' step further and read their mind, the A.N. is necessary but is not taught in the video. All practicing mentalists will understand this. If you don't, well, you'll have to do a little research.
In all fairness, that isn't in the trailer...
Plus, without numerous switches, this thing ends 'really dirty'.
No complaining, but you should know.
