Matchbox Mystery

I have been told that the machining on some of the brass blocks do not hold up and are visible under close inspection. What is the quality of this machining? Is it necessary to hide the box in your hand prior to dropping it on the plate? Can the opening be closed with the box being visible at all times in the hand?
