Respectfully, the fact that you specifically mention "..all the 6 initial cards" just means that you've missed a key aspect of the trick on why they can't be handed out (and why "girspiggy" answer is such...)
Since this forum is public, not much more can be said.
It's a fun, good card trick w/options. You can only perform with the "packet" if that's what you prefer, or you can use any portion (25% or half or more...)of the remaining deck to add another dimension to your performance.

Girspiggy, by 'some of the cards', do you mean all the 6 initial cards or some other ungimmicked cards from the rest of the presumably gimmicked deck?..

During the original routine you let the spec handle half of the packet (the red cards). There is no need to let them handle anything else. The deck is for all intents and purpose also examinable when you hand them the red cards first and then the blacks. Somebody hinted what's going on
