Bulldog Not Really As Described in the Ad Report this review

Three stars because it's a good effect combining a prediction with a signed card to improbably place. But be aware that the advertising, which reads: "NO SWITCHES. NO DITCHING.", is quite misleading, which for me costs it a couple stars. The trick at its heart relies on (i) a gimmick that MUST be ditched immediately and, (ii) at it's essence, a switch with a clip ala Sankey. (The idea of presenting this kind of effect without a ditch and/or switch prompted me to buy the trick so that's a bit disappointing and the gimmick alone isn't really worth the $15. A gimmick that wouldn't need to be ditched would be worth that price.)

I agree as the ad said no switching or ditching, which was the main reason I purchased it. Very disappointed watching the explanation and obviously you have to ditch the gimmick and switch the spectator’s card to complete the effect. Why does Penguin and/or other dealers allow such blatant false ads?

The switch is not Paperclip by Jay Sankey, if it was I wouldn't have released it. I disagree that it isn't worth $15.00. You are welcome to your opinion and I do respect that. Just wanted to add that you are not paying $15.00 for a gimmick, you are learning how to make something that literally costs just pence and it is as strong and as baffling as every other (more expensive) gimmick that I have used.

The gimmick will last a long time, it is easy to make and if you lose it or damage it then just make another.

Best wishes,

Joel Dickinson.

Joel, you missed the real complaint, the false advertising. If the reviewers statements are correct and you have to both ditch and switch, then the bold NO SWITCHES. NO DITCHING text in the main description is blatantly false advertising. What’s the response to that?

- Thanks.

I don't see those particular words in the ad, currently...perhaps that part has been removed by a Penguin after some of the complaints.

This is nothing new I have been doing this for years with cards. The addition of one blue card and one red Is new, and IMHO is a huge improvement. The gimmick/f??d has been used with dollars for years. I haven't bought this but I do think that new magicians that don't read books should buy this for educational purposes.

Should also note that it's not a quick reset kind of effect.

reggiesim : Hi, "This is nothing new I have been doing this for years with cards. The addition of one blue card and one red Is new, and IMHO is a huge improvement."

With greatest of respect this its self is a contradiction in terms.

Also, you said, 'I haven't bought this'. Had you bought it you would see I credit regarding 'dollar bills' etc.

jschrier : What? I have just reset this in seconds. Have you bought the trick?

I, too, am curious about the "switching and ditching" comment that was not addressed yet. Was this in the original advertisement and hence removed? If so, why? ... if many say this involved switching and ditching? Does the trick Joel... It does look like you ditch something into your pocket in the video

Hi pjperl and noxid8,

Regarding switching and ditching, I didn't write the text.
But I will say this talk of ditching and switching is border line revealing and we are all in the secrets game aren't we.

Best wishes,

Joel.

Joel, I admit that I first view I thought it was more similar to Paperclipped than it really is. I am glad I bought it as the premise and possibilities are different from Jay's work--which you do of course credit at the end. I think that people who are reviewing the effect without purchasing and assume you are just doing Paperclipped have actually been fooled! I think in one's repertoire of signed-card-to-impossible-location effects a little variety doesn't hurt. I own Paperclipped, Paragon 3D, ToiBox, and the effects bundled with The Bullet, and I love them all. Bulldog is in good company. Thanks for this. You do good work.

Thank you for taking the time to review this as I will NOT be purchasing this now as I too was thinking "WHOA...no switch or ditch or anything?" and then to hear you guys say you do is a bit disheartening. I was getting my hopes up.

Another lying BS demo that does not even show the trick, it is a shame that magic has come to this.

Hello sirbrad,

I’ve been nothing but polite replying to a heap of these messages, however your rude attitude can’t be ignored. The demo shows EXACTLY how the trick plays out and shows everything what this will achieve. If you’re not interested in the trick just don’t buy it. Nobody has a gun to your head saying ‘buy the trick’.

And you say it’s a shame that magic has come to this, come to what? I was around when magic was about brotherhood, being polite to each other and showing respect to one and all. The reality is, it’s a shame magic has come to this.

And regarding this being a ‘BS’ demo, it’s far from it. I worked hard with Penguin Magic, driven for 14 hours in total, performed for groups of people and entertained with Bulldog. And our goal was to provide a real and fair demonstration of Bulldog and that is exactly what you see. I imagine you’ll come back with some cocky response, however I’m happy to talk like a normal person so if you do get back to me. Then let’s talk properly.

All the best,

Joel

Obviously you do not know who I am, but I have been doing magic now for almost 40 years now professionally, probably longer than you have been alive. And yes it is a BS demo, most demos in the last 15 years have been BS as they cater to hobbyists who only want to buy secrets and filled with useless loud music, cut-shots, edits, and loud screaming girls in empty lots. Not to professionals who are looking to buy working material. Back in the 90's we actually saw REAL demos of how a trick looks beginning to end with none of that BS, and as professional I do not buy "secrets" I buy magic that I can use and magic that will entertain my audience. In fact 99% of everything that I buy I know how it is done, or I at least have a good idea, which is a good thing as I know if I will use it or not. But today's over the top demos barely even show the effect, it is all "bells and whistles" trying to sell secrets to beginners and hobbyists who already have junk drawers that are overflowing. No longer do you see the REAL presentation in real time, just a bunch of BS clips and cut-shots to stupid music. I made posts about these types of demos on this forum back in 2003 even and it has only gotten worse. If you want to sell an item just show the damn trick and stop trying BS people with editing. I purposely avoid buying from anyone who does this type of BS. Real magicians do not buy secrets they buy magic that they can use to entertain laymen with. Someone will do a full performance of it on YouTube eventually anyway so you may as well do it yourself. When you put that much work into a demo it does not actually make it better, it makes it worse and makes it look like you are lying and trying to scam people, which sounds like you already tried to do by lying about the description. So yeah, just show the damn trick honestly from beginning the end and you will not have all these issues.

jduk:Sorry if I offended you. The truth of the matter is that I didn't need to buy the download to know that it has been done with bills before. I also didn't need to buy the trick just to see who you credit as I already know who should have been credited. Where did I contradict my self? You sound angry calm down.

Like I said in my earlier post. The trick looks great and I wish you nothing but success with it.

The trailer is a fair depiction of the trick in situ. I don't see any fraud or representation at all...

wow... when i read all these comments i am fascinated where the magic has gone...blaming each other... when i started doing magic... i tried to figure things out myself... no you tube... no dvds... just books... and in Czech not that many... so i do come from pre internet era.. and still am not so old..

i am not a professional and when ever i buy a trick i am paying for the idea.. and i am happy to pay for it... and yea i have a ton of stuff... and many times i do not perform it... but then i get some idea about an effect i could do and then i go to my drawer of videos and know i will find the answer to my adea there. i hardly do effect as i bought it... most of the time i try to combine ideas from different places...

i bought this... payed for this and am happy with it... because it gave interesting ideas ... thank you Joel for it...

fcchief Good to see you still around, I wish they would bring the old forum back not sure why they changed it to this new horrible format. But yeah these demos are definitely a problem, and many even make great tricks look worse than they actually are and do them a disservice. So there is no way to know whether a trick is being accurately represented through a demo until you actually buy it, and many are not. Many tricks are great enough to stand up to repeated views on video many are not, and require misdirection in person. But there a fine line between "protecting a secret" from video viewing and being outright misleading, and it is tough to decipher between the two when you do not see a full live performance. Because as I said us long-time magicians/working professionals do not buy "secrets" anyway, we buy entertainment pieces that we know we can use and that we know will entertain out audiences. Most hobbyists and beginners tend to buy secrets at first, and there are far more of those than professionals. So I can see why they cater to that crowd, but that also does not make it right. Especially if they are lying or being dishonest and making it look like it is much easier to do than it really is. A lot of dishonest sellers do this and then try and hide behind the "you are buying the secret" excuse as to why they cannot give you a refund, which is BS, if they were deceiving and dishonest—even criminal in that case which would be fraud and theft. So really you should do the demo unedited and raw like the old days, just like the "Dick Stoner VHS demos" that I still have today from the 90's. What you see is what you get, no fluff, no bells and whistles, no loud music, no screaming girls in empty parking lots, just the routine. Then you are safe, be we know that most want to sell "secrets" to beginners and hobbyists by editing demos and making them appear better than they actually are, not routines to professionals. So that is the problem with all of these new demos going back 15-20 years now, and many are scams and many border scams and fraud and are purposely made "deceptive" to con the buyer into buying something that turns out to be not as great as it appeared to be. So I praise those creators who still do raw demos, and actually make tricks that are good enough to hold up to repeat viewings, or are at least honest about what you get and what goes on while describing what is involved. When I click o a video I do not want to see some guy walking down a street for 2 minutes to bad music, just sow me the damn trick and stop wasting my time. Usually demos like that I either fast forward or I close it out completely if I see there is nothing but pop-ups messages and pictures, and them telling me what I "will be able to do" yet they "can't show me" because the trick is too transparent and easy to figure out, or does not hold up to video viewing; and they may lose money from those buying the "secret".

Really? There's a gimmick involved? and you have to ditch it? I thought the signed card would be returned to the deck, shuffled, put in a vault, then magically end up clipped to another selected card that was shown at the start of the trick. Who knew that the real magic was not caused by transportation of molecules from the card and ink from the pen, then re-incarnated to another card. So we're saying there is no real magic here? Only manipulation and deception? Not for me. I only want real magic that can never be detected and does not need to be practiced. Only way that would be worth $15. And now down to $10. Heck, I would have paid $17 if the trick involved pure magic and no gimmicks. Glad I didn't get taken for something that is not real magic....

Hi Joel,
Don't listen to these kids. They don't have better work to do than to diss something they can just dream about to come up.
I'm actually fan of your work and I think you are working really hard to make your creations great!
I don't think anything is actually wrong in the demo and so on.
Now to everybody who's got rude here.
Guys If you are call yourself magicians and you see something like this then you should expect some "switching or ditching"
It's just logical and you don't have be rude to the creator.
I'm really sad that even such ppl are here and you should quit this.
Magic should be fun.
