A pity Dan and Penguin stay so true to Tarbell that they include the racist title:'oriental' and
'orient' are UK racist words and practices used by admirers of Queen Victoria and Tory/Conservative
politicians promoting slavery, colonialism and Empire.
Hopefully Dan and Penguin will get
on board publically to acknowledge Black Lives Matter and assist in ridding 'Magic' learning and
performing of such vile white racist actions.
Notwithstanding this each and all of these
three routines are A1 excellent in detailing and explaining these effects.
While I prefer the term Asian, the term Oriental is not universally considered to be racist. It means from the Orient, or not Occidental. Not all people from Asia have an issue with the term Oriental. For example, my acupuncturist friend from China practices what he calls "Oriental medicine." You can find Asian martial artists who refer to their arts as "Oriental martial arts."
Since there is no reason to needlessly offend anyone, I agree that Penguin should probably adopt the term "Asian" instead of "Oriental." At the same time, I don't think it's really accurate to call using the term a "vile white racist" action either.
Please note that my comments reflect my own experience here in the US. The term "Oriental" may certainly be considered much more offensive in the UK than it seems to be here.
Wow, just wow...what a sad life it must be to constantly view EVERYTHING in our world as “racist”.. Personally, as a mixed race AMERICAN, I find it extremely RACIST and embarrassing when I hear some people use terms like “white privileged” or “Congressional BLACK Caucus”.. those are phrases that are intentionally meant to DIVIDE us, not promote UNITY. Enough with the hatred..It is destructive and unproductive... of course Black lives DO matter, as do Asian lives, Hispanic lives, and the lives of ALL RACES “MATTER” to someone..I am SICK of half of my family (the “white” ones) being labeled as “racists” simply because of the color of their skin. I know racism..I’ve been called “half-breed”, “Uncle Tom”, and “wigger” more often than you can imagine...mostly by “Blacks”. This stupidity needs to end soon..I shouldn’t have to pick “sides”.....None of us had a “choice” in the color of our skin tone. Peace, everyone...try showing LOVE to EVERYONE and stop slinging around insults and hateful rhetoric. The constant use of the word “racist” is literally diluting the true meaning of the word, and it needs to stop immediately. And oh yeah, EVERY RACE on Earth has some uneducated, RACIST elements within them, even “Black people”...PLEASE BE KIND to each other!
I forgot one other HUGE point (sorry, I got “emotional”) ..All of us, lucky enough to be alive TODAY, have 2 very important things in common....all of our days are numbered, and we ALL END UP the very SAME color...it’s the color of the Earth - whether you are buried, cremated, or put into a mausoleum, 500 years from NOW, we ALL become part of the Earth again, regardless of skin color, accomplishments, failures, attitudes, biases, or ANYTHING else. Perhaps we should all focus on what we can do to bring us together, as opposed to the stupidity that divides us. We all end up the same color, eventually. I’m NOT very religious, and doubt that a “higher power” really exists, but for those who do, I pose a question. Why all the attention on “Race” (when the “soul” leaves and our bodies, eventually, all decompose and return to the Earth), when we could be focusing our attention NOW on making the world a more unified and better place, for ALL of us, while we are HERE? None of us have an abundance of TIME. It’s the ONE thing that no one ever has enough of...so why waste a second of it on hate and divisiveness?
And to be honest, I find it DISGUSTING that my (partially) African roots, are related to the savages there, that STILL enslave other Africans, to this very day, and think it’s normal and acceptable. NO! It is NOT! But to be brutally honest, most people (whites, blacks, etc) just don’t care...it’s “their problem over there” seems to be the attitude of the western world. But I’m just a “half-breed” so my opinion really doesn’t matter, right? I can’t wait until “RaceBlackHart” (sounds pretty racist to me - see how that works?) forms a scathing criticism of this post...he likes to post a lot. I Don’t know the man, or his heart, but I can play this stupid game of “racist this, racist that, blame game too, because I LIVE IT, and it solves NOTHING. If I were to assume, (which is a BAD idea, more often than not) my guess is he’s an overweight, middle to late aged white dude(late 40s, early 50’s) livin in a suburb somewhere in AZ, NM, and likes to pat himself on the back a lot, for being so “open minded”. Not to pick on him, but he really should change his screen name. Someone’s going to take offense to it, and ruin his life, for no good reason... That’s where we are today, and it needs to stop. I’m sure Race is fine human being, and probably very kind to EVERYONE, but from the middle perspective, do we not see how dangerous and destructive our current dialogues have become? “Anonymous” from Fiji (original poster), I do t think when the Tarbell books were written, Harlan Tarbell (early 1920s) was NOT a RACIST. He was bringing something from the Eastern Word to the Western World, using the common vernacular of his time...in fact, it was a celebration of something new and exotic, and never meant to be racial or political...Please grow up, learn some history, and quit being a “race-baiter”. It’s NOT helpful, at all.
This is the first time I've encountered socio-political trolling in the Penguin comments - someone making the accusation of racism in an attempt to trigger negative emotional reactions. The absurdity did make me laugh! Thanks for the chuckle.
It is absurd. And it needs to be addressed by adults. Sadly, political opinions and popular movements have made RACE a “double-edged” razor, where two sides can’t find a harmonious middle. And it’s the easiest thing to find! Yet, we stumble...it’ IS very sad. We all deserve better, and it has no place on a magic forum. I really think we love the art because of the WONDER it creates... and WONDER does not have “races”
I mean, really, what’s next? Hoffinzer was a racist because he was French (white European male) and used cards that were “mostly white” on the faces of the cards? Gimme a break...end the stupidity. Are ceilings “racist” because many of them are “white”, no matter where in the world they appear? Please...enough is enough
Let me get my black side out, here. I OWN my own construction company, and have for years..I don’t care what color the client is, (and many times, I never know - because the house, building, apartment complex, condo units, etc are SOLD well before I ever meet the eventual owner of the dwelling). I compete against white-owned companies, black-owned companies, and the Hispanic-owned companies (that ARE diluting our opportunities- because of NO immigration requirements/testing for COVID/background checks/ or even marketable skills). But I don’t complain, blame racism, etc. I win some, I lose some, but I NEVER cry racism. I have white guys with dreds (culturally inappropriate, in some minds), black guys that have bleached blonde hair (Holla!) and even an Asian crew that does clean up, and high end finishes. We understand that we all succeed TOGETHER, not because of our differences but because of our common goal...to keep the GREENBACKS flowin, for ALL of us. And we have been HIGHLY successful over the last 20 + years, in a tourist area, with more white Northern “transplants” than most areas of the country would tolerate.. Penguin can attest, I’ve spent many of those dollars right here. So it totally pains me to listen to race baiters complain about Penguin or Dan, especially, as being “culturally unaware” by simply relating the original effects from Tarbell, updating them, making them useful for today’s audiences, and then implying that the word “Orient” or “Oriental” was meant to be hateful... THAT just shows the original posters own biases and ignorance...Ignorance of history, his own biases, and a dangerous willingness to create a “manufactured” problem.. I think he posed that from a UK perspective?? Perhaps your beloved White Queen Racist Liz can FINALLY (before she dies, and you Brits expect the world to mourn) FINALLY, find some of her millions to fix the Brits dental issues?? See, how that works?? Another ugly stereotype, and I hope IT STINGS....and Yes, I DO know that Michael Phelps said something similar, and was “cancelled” over it. Two big differences..1).I don’t back down to a ridiculous mob frenzy, and 2) I’m just like BARACK, a mix of the very BEST, and happy about it! So get over yourselves, get a sense of humor, and get over your “racial guilt”....it’s all a product of the lies you have been made to believe.
