"The brilliance of Juan Tamariz, the greatest and most influential card magician alive, is the reason I can’t wait to read this book, cover to cover." - David Blaine

"I've waited more than twenty years to read this book, and the wait was worth it. If you've spent years looking for magic but have only been finding tricks, this book may contain the secrets you've been searching for." - Michael Weber

"This is the most difficult book on magic you are ever going to read, and it might upset most of your beliefs about magic, and maybe even change your life. It is only for those who believe that magic is an art and a science, and who are willing to use their head and open their hearts. But if you do so, you will be rewarded with the love and the insight from someone, who is possibly the most important and influential magician that has ever lived. Never before has a book on the theory and philosophy of magic contained so much practical guidance and artistic vision as Juan Tamariz’s The Magic Rainbow." - Roberto Giobbi

"The Magic Rainbow is an awe inspiring look through the eyes of a true master, the depth of thought and understanding is that of a genius. Juan's passion for magic leaps off every page. We are lucky to both have this book and that Juan chose magic as his passion." - Joseph Barry

The Magic Rainbow is the fruit of more than forty years of thought, study and analysis by Juan Tamariz, considered a genius of magic the world over. In 1988, Tamariz published The Magic Way, which became an immediate classic. In it he revealed a brilliant system for making the secret methods of magic effects impossible to detect. In The Magic Rainbow, Tamariz takes his readers and their audiences farther up The Magic Way until they are delivered to the ultimate destination, where logical analysis is abandoned to emotions of amazement, fascination and wonder; where the feeling of magic becomes, for a while, an impossibility firmly rooted in reality.

In explaining how the magician can achieve this goal, Tamariz provides remarkable and original techniques that make it possible to erase bits of memory that might lead to the method of the trick, and how to enhance and create memories that build the impossibility of the effect both immediately and in the future. He gives an original strategy for dealing with technical mistakes when they happen during performances. He explains why and how comedy and drama combine with magic, in both bad and good ways, how to make the most effective combinations for creating astonishing and memorable magic—and much more.

The Magic Rainbow is Juan Tamariz’s magnum opus on magic-performance theory. It presents essays, explanations, revelations, insight and analysis—forty years of thinking by the world’s most respected and beloved magician. Above all, The Magic Rainbow is Juan Tamariz’s love song to magic and magicians, with lyrics that will guide your performances to their highest peaks and your audiences to the rainbow of magical emotion.

I’ve been reading this every night before bed, hoping to absorb some brilliant ideas and then drift off to sleep. Instead, I’ve been wondering what it is that I just read. Maybe this reads beautifully in Spanish but it comes off as being too flowery and pseudo philosophical in English. Maybe I’m just not the cerebral reader that this book requires. I’m also reading Burger’s “Mastering The Art of Magic” and I feel that I can actually recall the ideas and concepts presented there but I’m struggling with the Magic Rainbow.
There’s no denying Tamariz and his inctedible depth of knowledge and skill but I have to be honest about what I’ve found in this book.

I just returned from Magi-fest where this book sold out in a matter of minutes. I was able to get a copy, in addition to seeing Juan's show and attending his worksop. No one, and I mean no one, thinks about magic in the same way as the Maestro. This book is much different from the older work by this title.
The book is filled with tricks, but more important, reasons for the tricks, philosophy of the magic, and the thinking that has mad Mr. Tamariz a wold sensation. This book is filled with real magic. In my collection, I have over 300 hard-bound books including all of the other work by Juan. This is his best (imho) and the performer, collector, lover of magic (the true meaning of amateur) will all be thrilled.
There are some books that are to be read once, some that are to be studied, and a few that are to be devoured slowly like a fine meal. This may be the finest meal you could ever get. Join the 150 people from Magi-Fest who couldn't get their wallets out fast enough. This is a meal that you can enjoy over and over.
The book is too good for this review to do it justice. It joins THE BOOKS OF WONDER, JOHNNY THOMSON'S BOOKS, and GREATER MAGIC as works that have a rare quality and lessons that transcend magic. Just buy it!

As the translator I have read it many times. After all the long process and hard work I am pleased to be able to read it again as a reader, and it feels fresh and new every time. Tons of practical knowledge about the art.

Tamariz is not overrated at all. I am not a card magician and really do no card tricks so only heard all the raving reviews of Juan's work.

This book as my introduction and while the beginning had me asking if Tamariz took too many mushrooms.. Soon it all came together and I realized the understanding of where magic comes from and how it exists demands such a lengthy description.

Tamariz is to MAGIC as Einstein is to science. He really has broken things down and studied the art of magic to a point of being able to articulate things I dont think anyone else has.

This book is a must have for all magicians... lovers of psychology and science.

Not up to the standard of his other works Report this review

I was sooo looking forward to this. When it came out, I got it right away (at full price). What a disappointment. And I know I am reflecting what my other friends think.

Maybe it's because I have many other books on magic theory, but I got almost nothing new out of this. In some ways, it seemed so trite.

If it had not been written by Juan, I would have given it only 2 stars.

The Magi Rainbow Book Report this review

I’m addicted to this book. I have to admit that it is heavy in knowledge.
Somethings I have to read two or three times to understand what he is saying. It’s a whole lot of information. One very important thing I surely got
now,is what the Magic Rainbow is. This has changed my view how I understand
the Magic effect’s achievement. I have a lot more to adapt to my magic experience. If you are a serious magician and want to go deeper into our
craft. Buy this book and take your magic to a much higher level.

Monumental Report this review
Verified buyer Pro Privacy ON (login to see reviewer names) on February 27th, 2019
This book is monumental, a large collection of the escorial newsletter from Juan and other essays. You can feel the love of magic in every page.
Some parts are extremely poetical and a personal vision from Juan who is a 360 artist. Others, like why El Cochecito works, are very very intense. I haven't finished, I won't read it only once.
A must read if you want to understand and learn from the Spanish school maestro.

Beautiful book and writing Report this review

I hesitated to buy this book because I had read some reviews that said the translation was terrible. I have only read half of the book so far, but that is not the case. I do not have any problem reading the book and have not found any translation problems.

The book has great theory and does a great job of teaching new and old magicians things to know when performing.

How many subjects can you cover in one book? Report this review

I just started reading this. It's going to take a while, of course. There is so much packed in here, and it's a big book. And I'm still re-reading bits and pieces the other JT books I have on the shelf all the time!

I like how it progresses in such a logical order... it's not just a handful of random essays - they clearly lead you on a journey. The table of contents is enough to realize no stone is left unturned. This is almost a magical dissertation.
