The magic wand has played an important part in magical mysteries throughout the ages. It has been used as a symbol of power, but perhaps more important for theatrical magicians, it has been employed to help conceal palmed objects and misdirect attention.

However, the traditional wand has fallen out of favor, so Dan gives you many alternatives that are not only more recognizable, but more deceptive.

First, Dan uses some simple office supplies to show that a classic vanishing wand method has great potential, especially when he adds a few of his own touches.

Then, Dan shows you another variation using the same easy-to-make gimmick in a slightly different way for a quick transposition.

Returning to tradition for a moment, Dan teaches you a simple way to produce your very own fancy wand, both mechanically and magically.

And, he examines a couple of different handlings for producing other wand-like items from other small containers, useful in close-up situations.

Next, an updated method of using a wand to secretly load a handkerchief by making it even less gimicked and easier to prepare.

Then, Dan produces a bunch of strange items from a borrowed wallet and use an antique wand to apparently squeeze them all back into place.

To show you the potential of these wand-related methods, he combine a couple of them to create some seemingly impromptu fun with a drinking straw.

Also, Dan incorporates one great concept into a baseball-themed, stage piece that's a fun opener or a solid piece on a variety show. It's a grand slam.

Dan will also show you something really disgusting you can do with a pencil to impress everyone at your school or office.

Then, Dan takes a strange idea and makes it quite a bit cooler as he causes a borrowed bill to travel into a sealed ice-cream container.

Returning to the pencil, he shows you how to use it to make a borrowed ring answer questions by mysteriously moving... and everything is examinable.

And finally, Dan plays a fun game of hide-n-seek with a salty snack. This is a perfect puzzler for your next party. Pass the pretzels, please.

As you can tell, this lesson is stuffed with more magic than any other up to this point, and most of it is very commercial, useable stuff.

So forget about what you think a magic wand might be, and get ready to discover the potential in objects all around you.

New to the Series Report this review

This my first down load of the Tarbel Series. I have alway been a big fan of Dan Harlin and this lecture realy show cases his talent. I do not know why I was drawn to this particular lecture but I am glad I hit the Add To Cart button. Dan takes all the old material and makes it new and this alone is worth watching. I have a complete set of Tarbels and now I will be looking at them with a new reverence. If you have a set I would recommend reading the lesson before watching the lecture.

I look forward to adding more to my library.

Teaches How To Adapt Tarbell To Your Needs Report this review
Verified buyer Pro Privacy ON (login to see reviewer names) on November 23rd, 2017
I was surprised 2 ways by this video, one positively and one not so much. I was expecting more of a literal demonstration and explanation of the Tarbell wand effects. This is not that. Instead it is an exploration of how to apply and update those effects into a modern magic performance. All in all that may be more valuable, though I would have liked a bit more of discussion of the original effects before taking off and presenting the rework. Still and all, I think this dvd is a bargain,

Not what I was hoping for. Report this review

Dan's Tarbell series are always well done it's just this time it wasn't what I was hoping for. I just got a new fancy wand so I purchased this hoping to find some neat things I could with it other than the Vernon wand spin, unfortunately the majority of content on this is mostly magic with wand like objects such as straws or markers that you have to gimmick in some way or another, some of which are but many of which are not applicable concepts to an actual wand. I normally take away a fair bit from these Tarbell courses but there was nothing really for me on this one.

Materials Inspector & Fabricator. Report this review

The development of wand magic has - until Harlan's unique re-interpretations demonstrated and explained in this Lesson - been in the hands of USA and UK male white magicians who offer 'kid's shows', 'children's magic shows - also sometimes synonymous with so-called ' comedy magic'.

The use of wands in these shows has usually been a cycle of bullying, belittling and similar power - plays by the adult over the child. Wand magic developments have become encapsulated/ossified in changing and/or increasing the ways the adult can humiliate and make a 'laughing stock' of children; and in the physical properties of the materials used to fabricate the wand

Wands are currently available in wood, metal, plastic, foam , cardboard, rubber; they bend, wobble, fall apart, squirt liquids, create electric shocks.

Thus, in 'children's shows' an original intent of the use of wands - misdirection by using a bigger object to hide a smaller object - is missed, in favour of using a wand with the intention given by musical directors... as a baton or 'short thin stick' to lead other musicians

In this download/dvd Harlan stays faithful to the wand as a vehicle of misdirectional intent while developmentally exploring the potentials for different types of materials in slightly different spatial forms - eg. pencils, sharpies, straws and other relatively 'short, thin sticks', along side wood, plastic and metal

So, in this Tarbell Lesson Harlan provides in detail the design and fabrication of several different wands that can be used in over 20 different routines, that restores the wand as an instrument of real/actual magical intent and of magical consummation.

As usual, Dan shows the mechanics - measurements, materials and their sources, qualities and quantities of fabrications, tools and how/ways to 'get-into' and 'out-of' each piece of apparatus (including clothing and staging) used.

"Dan's the man/Hurrah for Dan/He's done it agan'.

Fun with wands! Report this review

I enjoyed this selection. As always there are a few tiny nuggets of extreme usefulness hidden amidst the larger routines. A couple of the gems are of use to any magician. But only those who have eyes to see may appreciate it. Much like all of the Tarbell course! Well done!

Good stuff and lots of it Report this review
Verified buyer Pro Privacy ON (login to see reviewer names) on August 11th, 2020
It's hard to write a review when there are already so many. However, I will add my two cents.

First of all, there is so much. Over the years, I have looked for good wand tricks, and they are so hard to find. So you ask yourself, don't you have the written volumes of Tarbell, and the answer is yes.

So why is it surprising that there is so much in this lesson: Dan Harlan.

As he often does, Dan provides as much or more of the value in the lesson as was in the original.

A couple of highlights for me.

1. How to make your own lightweight "metallic" wand with cheap supplies and a Dremel.
2. Using the same want for additional purposes, such as loading/producing a silk (one of the wand's inane properties allows this).
3. Wand tricks that look inspired by "loops" but uses a clever gimmick that is for the most part Dan's design.
4. Dan's baseball take on a "magnetic" wand method, which also adds a baseball in the mix. Even if you don't enjoy that sport, the methods, thinking and construction are useful.
5. The vanishing dollar bill and ice cream trick is great and commercial. Agena, Dan revamped the whole effect to produce something outstanding.

Great lesson.
