PRISM: The Color Series of Mentalism by MAX MAVEN While a sizable literature devoted to mentalism was produced in the past hundred years, little has stood the test of time. Among the scant amount that has... the work of MAX MAVEN.
In stock: usually ships within 24 hours!
Writing under the name of Phil Goldstein, MAVEN has created one of the largest, cleverest and most influential bodies of work in the field, stretching from the latter part of the twentieth century into the twenty-first. His star rose early, with the publication of five slim collections, each packed with innovative and performance-caliber mentalism. These booklets, which have become widely known as "The Color Series," contained items such as "Desire", "The Spirit is Willing (to Write)" and "Four-sided Triangle"items that have become modern classics in the field.

This book is a must for parlour mentalist! However, if you seldom do parlour, I don't recommend this book to you. But if you are interested, you can get this book to add on some of the effects to your presentation. And yes, this book is not for beginners.

Could not put it down Report this review

If you are looking for effects that move in a straight line this is for you. The 5 color books span a time period from 1976 to 1980 and were ahead of their time. The essays alone at the beginning of each book are worth the price of admission. Looking beyond the effects there is a wealth of performing insights that will make you a better performer. The book does assume a certain level of knowledge like how to do a billet switch or a center tear. My only problem with the book was I could not put it down and it is already getting dog eared! As a side note look into the 13 steps DVD it is great and I would recommend both 13 Step Book and DVD along with this book to kick off your 2011.

Once again, Max has proven his superiority in the field of mentalism. Great material, and best of all, it's stuff most performers will actually be able to use. One word of warning for beginners, however: Max writes from the standpoint of presumed knowledge. So be prepared to do a little research to learn how to perform moves Max simply refers to without going into detail.

This is a book that is filled with solid material that will fool people. The presentations are brilliant and a lot of thought has gone into them. Stage bender in the green book and the spirit is willing to write are two routines that by themselves are worth the price of the book.

Very stage and commercial type mentalism. It does require setup. It's generally great though

There's a reason there aren't more reviews, the professionals who use this material want it buried. People talking negatively about it are just fine. It's that way with ell of the really great material in magic, much of which can be found in old books and magazines. Take a old book at random, like Martin Gardner's Encyclopedia of Impromptu Magic. 90% of people who blow the dust off of it and read it won't get what all the fuss is. Everytime I open it I see hidden potential, and I'm just fine with those who think I'm crazy.
Yeaaah, I'm going to have to go ahead & disagree with you all. Report this review

Sorry guys! I'm going to have to go against the grain on this one. Appoligies to you Jason Loocifer from Singapore, this 1 is for beginers. There's nothing really Earth-shattering here. I got one descent effect out of this book.
Yes,this book is filled with much of Max's "Classic" work from the 70's & 80's. Let's keep it real "Classic" is just another word for "Old". These tricks may have been jaw-droppers back in the days when people thought "Pro Wrestling" was real. Audiences today are less gullible and smarter now than when these scriptures where wrote.
If you want to spend money on Literature, I'd highly reccomend any of the writings of Luke Jermay over the works of Max Maven.
On the plus side However, If you are new to mentalism or making the crossover from magic. This book would be a great follow up after you've read 13 Steps.
