When you mention tricks created by Jerry Andrus, several classics of magic come to mind: his Linking Safety Pins, Andrus Card Control, his classic coin routine, Miser's Miracle are but three. None are more famous, amazing, or popular as his Zone Zero. This routine is totally unique, not difficult to perform, and can be adapted to many situations and themes.

Effect

Show a board (11" x 17" styrene plastic with original Jerry Andrus design on both sides). There is a hole near the center. The board is shown on both sides. and both hands are shown empty. The performer reaches through the hole in the board with an empty hand and comes out with a brightly-colored (2.5") rubber ball. The ball is bounced on the floor to show it is an actual, solid ball. The ball is put back through the hole (and back into "Zone Zero"). Immediately the board is shown on both sides and both hands are repeatedly shown empty in the process...the ball is gone! The magician explains that the ball does not exist when it is in "Zone Zero." He reaches through the hole and brings the ball back out. "The ball exists when it's out here...but not when I put it through the hole and into Zone Zero." The ball is put through the hole and again it completely vanishes. The board is shown on both sides and the hands are empty.

It seems impossible! No body loads. The principles involved can be utilized for a wide variety of other effects. Vanish objects besides a ball, like an orange, pack of smokes, rolled up socks, etc. In addition, you can also utilize the Zone Zero "Master Move" with objects other than the Zone Zero board. For example, show a large book on both sides, then produce items from a book. (This is one idea not included in the instructions. We're sure you'll come up with many more!)

Includes: 11 x 17 silk screened "Zone Zero" board with original Jerry Andrus design, 3" ball, DVD with instructions and additional rare footage of Jerry Andrus, plus written instructions that include the Perfect Page routine.

The instructions cover the Master Move, Zone Zero routine, plus the Routine (a small box is cut open on the ends so it can be laid flat. Show it on both sides, then fold it back into a box shape and produce an item from it, like a ball. Put the ball back into the box and smash the box flat, then show both sides of the box and your empty hands! What a space saver!) Instructions also include "Perfect PackageMoves With A Paper Bag. (Imagine showing a folded and flat paper bag all-around, then open and show the inside empty, then produce a ball, orange, etc.).

The DVD features Jerry Andrus performing and explaining Zone Zero! The DVD also includes bonus footage of Jerry performing his incredible comedy Table Act from 1960, and home-movie footage of Jerry demonstrating his incredible "Nutty Nut & Bolt Illusion," a mind-bending, eye-popping optical illusion.

The Zone Zero Board Design on this board is the same as on the original board used by it's inventor, Jerry Andrus. Side one, on the left above, is a picture of Jerry's pulse. Jerry created this design by placing photographic paper on a turning drum. He then affixed a small mirror on his arm, so it moved with his pulse. In a dark room, he shined a light on the mirror so the reflected light hit the photographic paper on the turning drum. The result was a single, squiggly line created by his pulse. He then duplicated the design, in a spiral fashion, to create the design on the left. This design also appears on the cover of Andrus Card Control.

Zone Zero is a hero sandwich! Report this review

Ok, lemme 'splain...a hero sandwich is multiple layers of breadmeatcheeseveggie goodness in one bite. Zone Zero II is exactly the same thing in magical terms! This should be as standard an effect as the Cups & Balls or the Shell Game, and within each true magicians repitoire.

Firstly, Zone Zero II is not about the board and ball (oh, and that is all, materially speaking, you are buying), it is about the instructions. These instructions are Jerry Andruss doing the effect, then doing it again with a board made of plexiglass - that's it. But friends, that is all you need. What is revealed are some of the prettiest, most common sense effects you will ever see envisioned. It is all so simple; Duchovnian simple.

Also, unless you posess giant hands, you will have to make your own board; the board you receive is sized for Jerry Andruss, and he evidently had HUGE hands. As a matter of fact, just plan on doing that now. Going in with that knowledge will further shift your attention off of the ball and board, and onto what you are really buying - the Jerry Andruss Zone Zero Effect.

When I first saw the video on YouTube, I wanted this, but a friend told me it was very difficult to do. It is NOT difficult at all. I recommend the silk screened board as opposed to the plain board. It adds to the routine.

I'm not sure why this is not a classic of magic, just like the cups and balls. It lends itself to limitless great routines.

I love these props. The colors and movement of this one leaves a lot of room to casually develop a story of your own. The hypnotic background is perfect if you are into the idea of hypnotism and make it visible from far in the back of the room.

Finally this is just fun, fun to do, and fun to watch!

A Real Classic Report this review

I love this trick. The yellow ball and hypnotic/spiraled board are perfect! I also changed the ball out for a "madball" the 80's classic "monster" designed foam balls. Letting ZONE ZERO be a portal to "the other side"! As if I am summoning a monster or some sort! :) A nice tribute to the classic movie "the gate".

This a great visual trick on stage since it is very big, like watching a juggler you can appreciate the art of this routine just as much as the technical mastery or magic effect.

Great original work, this is what magic is about!

Pros and cons Report this review

The routine (as a concept) is brilliant - pure sleight of hand and very deceptive. From that point of view this should have 5 stars.

However...

The written instructions are minimal, and the routine is very short. Almost every other performer I've seen use this has developed the routine far beyond what you get.

The DVD instructions are pretty poor. The whole thing lasts less than 2 minutes - a minute for the performance, and a minute for the performance again but using clear plexiglass. No instructions at all, no breaking down the moves, no helpful hints...nothing.

And the physical product itself...the board is just fine (though I prefer the out-of-stock-currently plain white version personally), but the ball is terrible. It's a rubber ball (good), the correct size (good) but it's far, far too grippy to enable you to do the master move of making the ball disappear as it enters the hole. He suggests putting talc on a ball if it's too grippy, but this is beyond that. I'll be shopping in pet and toy stores for a better (drier) one.

In short, the potential is great. The concept is great. The written instructions are minimal and a bit blah, the DVD could be SO much better, and the ball it comes with is virtually unusable.

This is just one of those things that is incredibly simple in concept and execution. It's a wonderful thing to practice and when done well looks incredible. The concept also lends itself well to many presentations that could be worked into nearly anyone's repertoire. This will take some time to perform well.
