Dai Vernon was the most influential magician of the twentieth century. His vision helped to define and raise the artistry of close-up and platform magic to a degree unequalled by any other magician then or today. His thinking pushed magic into the modern era. His contribution to magic was essential to its refinement and growth. His own magic is perhaps the most important-indeed essential-body of work ever produced for the art.
Almost 1100 pages of the finest magic from the most respected magician of our time. If you bought these masterworks separately, you would pay $225 or more, if you can even find them. The Essential Dai Vernon places them into your hands, in one beautiful hardcover volume with full-color dustjacket, for almost half that price.

Good, but not for the beginner Report this review

This mammoth volume contains a wealth of top rate effects, and information (particularly on the Max Malini and Nate Leipzig) which is neigh on impossible to find elsewhere. I really would have liked to have given this 5 stars, but there are several instances I where instructions are either incomplete, or poorly written. With enough knowledge in the given field (cards/silks/etc)these gaps can be filled in, but it does stop the book being a good first stop to the beginner. If you're new, buy it, shelve it, and then come to it after you've cut your teeth on something more beginner friendly.

This book contains a lifetime of strong magic. The book contains many of Dai Vernon's works and the magic is varied and in-depth. Plus, this book contains many extras concerning Vernon's life that give us a peek at the man behind The Professor. Despite the large size the book is easy to read, well bound, and stays open while I am practicing. I have to deduct 1 star because I don't like the paper quality. I looks and feels like typical printer paper. But that is a minor quibble, because this book is a cherished source of strong magic.

This is another piece of magic history. A great book to add to your collection of magic memorabilia. Very nicely illustrated.
