“Bob Cassidy is one of the true geniuses of mentalism and one of the most influential. Period.” - Jheff

“Bob Cassidy is also the real deal. He is a veteran performer, who often works unusual venues. He thinks deeply about the art and craft of mentalism.” - Michael Close

“Bob Cassidy [is] head and shoulders above so many mentalists, especially many of those currently engaged in the business of producing product and publications for the alleged improvement of their peers.” - Jamy Ian Swiss

“I have seen Richard Osterlind perform under many conditions and for many different kinds of groups. He is one of the strongest mystery performers it has ever been my pleasure to know.” - Richard Hatch

“Every time I get one of Richard’s effects, or read one of his books, I am filled with ‘that’s great’ moments. There are few individuals in this field that do that to me on a constant basis; Richard is at the top of that list. His thinking inspires me to be better at this craft and to constantly rethink what I’m doing and why I am doing it.” - Greg Arce

“I have read and watched everything Richard has offered our community. This man doesn’t just talk the talk, he walks he walk, for many years, for hundreds if not thousands of clients around the world, and he still does to this day.” - Marc Spellman

“Richard Osterlind is one of the most prolific, creative, and influential mentalists working today.” - Jheff

What will they teach?

In this dual Osterlind/Cassidy lecture, Richard and Bob will cover a lot of ground, both theoretical and practical. They'll be telling quite a few stories as well.

Richard Osterlind will be talking about his “roots” and those effects with which he began his career. Some of the items he plans to demonstrate and explain are:
  • Magic vs. Mentalism
  • Par Optic Vision
  • Al Mann’s Azonic Force
All of these will show Richard’s latest updates.

Bob Cassidy is a repository of wisdom and this lecture will be packed with usable, real-world information that will resonate with magician and mentalist alike.
Bob plans on demonstrating various updates, angles, and variations on…

  • The White Dwarf
  • Par Optic Vision
  • Dead Name Speller
Bob offers solid routines, interesting theoretical observations and straight-shooting practical advice. Even if you don't perform any mentalism at all, you will still learn a tremendous amount from his approach and professional insights.

Who are they?

Richard Osterlind has been a top corporate performer for over 40 years. He has traveled around the world entertaining presidents, heads of state, foreign dignitaries, CEO executives, sports figures, newscasters and audiences from every walk of life. He has become a legend in the corporate world. Richard has also become known as one of the leading teachers of Magic and Mentalism. With 30 videos, over 20 books and hundreds of original effects to his credit, there is hardly a performer who has not been influenced by his work. His down-to-earth manner of performing, coupled with his original, audience-tested methods, has made him a favorite in the eyes of his peers. He has constantly shown his ability to take time-honored secrets and update them for the modern world and his instructional materials have probably made more money for mystery performers than any other living instructor.

When asked if his ability is a gift granted to only a few, Bob Cassidy will just shake his head and smile. He knows only too well that it took many years of hard work to develop the skills which seem to come to him so naturally on stage. While serving in the United States Navy as a communications specialist, he developed an act in which he displayed his virtually photographic memory and a remarkable sense of intuition. It was during this time that he began an in-depth study of the powers of the mind which led to the creation of the mentalism demonstrations he presents today. He began performing semi-professionally as a mentalist, stage mind-reader, and hypnotist in 1972. His first major gig was performing for Holland America Cruises, where he honed his skills and introduced entirely new concepts to the art of mentalism. Two hundred cruises later he would write three books on the principles he developed during this period of his performing career. He has since published and recorded a long list of works on Mentalism and the related arts. Bob co-founded the Psychic Entertainers Association in 1978, served as its president (1982-83), and was editor of its journal, “Vibrations,” through 1982. He was elected to honorary life membership in 1988 and was the first mentalist to be awarded its “Award for Creativity in Psychic Entertainment” in 1996. In 2011, Bob was the recipient of the Psychic Entertainers Association Dunninger Award, presented for distinguished professionalism in the performance of mentalism. In 2013, Bob was the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award at MINDvention in Las Vegas.

What about Bob! Report this review

Unlike those who loved it. I found that I spent a great deal of the arduous 4 and ¾ hours wishing Bob would stop talking over poor Richard. This is an example of how professional Richard is when he frequently gets half a sentence in and then gets talked all over by Bob and his opinions. Rather than slapping him, Richard holds his tongue and acts as a gentleman.

I was expecting a great combination of experts and for the bits when Bob let Richard talk there was some great information. To be fair Bob did some good information too, however his need to constantly be the center of attention was so distracting that I found myself yelling “OH JUST SHUT UP BOB!” at my computer screen more than once.

The Interrupting Bob Report this review

Let me rephrase an old joke that pretty much sums up the whole lecture:

Knock, knock.
Who's there?
The interrupting Bob.
The interr....
BOOOOOOB

Even when Richard started talking about his childhood, Bob kept butting in.
I watched this with a magic buddy and both of us felt like punching the screen several times - that's how annoying it was.

Dan should have done something to prevent this from happening all the time...

Disappointed Report this review

I agree with 'bad'. The lecture was touted as covering a list of effects but that didn't happen. I too was very annoyed with Mr. Cassidy and really felt Richard's pain in dealing with it all. Mr. Osterlind is really a class act and shouldn't have been put in that situation.

no respect shown from Bob...inconsiderate Report this review

This was a great lecture. Honestly, I very much enjoyed both of these gentlemen, but Bob totally shut Rich down. It was uncomfortable to watch. Richard has a lot of class and he didn't shut Bob up out of professionalism, but damn. It's not the Bob Cassidy lecture. Rich isn't your wife man.

Not very happy with this Report this review

I was looking forward to this lecture but as others have commented there are some major issues. I watched this with a magic buddy and we were both not very happy - him more than me because he paid ;)

The dual lecture didn't work well. Bob Cassidy did bulldoze Richard Osterlind as mentioned above. I guess some find it hard to share the limelight. It showed. I would have liked to hear more from Richard and wished Dan Harlan would have mediated more and kept them on schedule.

Somehow the agenda changed alot from what was scheduled. It's not that the lecture is awful but its not what was advertised. Someone else says out 3 of 12 tricks scheduled were taught. That sounds about right.

Everyone works hard for their money. I think when someone spends it on something extracurricular like magic lectures they want to know they are getting what they pay for.
This lecture was not as advertised and got a little annoying.

Silence! Report this review

I have to agree with some of the negatives here. First off, I am a huge fan of both Cassidy and Osterlind. But I too wanted to reach through the screen and cover Bobs mouth. He continually cut Richard off and tried to overpower and control the whole lecture. It felt like Bob bullied Richard. That being said, there was a lot if valuable information covered. But sheesh ... It would have been nice to hear Richard speak. And finally, didn't care for the bait n switch. The lecture info said it would cover much more than it did.

Graduate Course Report this review
Verified buyer Pro Privacy ON (login to see reviewer names) on September 17th, 2014
For a graduate level course in Mentalism, go no further than this. This is not the usual "magician lecture" where they do a trick, teach you about it and sell it to you later. This is a great discussion and teach-in between two powerhouses of magic who are discussing methods, presentations, nuances and interpretations of effects as well as process and presentation. Want to learn more and gain insite you never thought you would have access to? This is it from two totally different personalities each sharing their own unique perspective.

Historic Report this review

It was such a pleasure to be in the audience during this lecture to hear two of the top mentalists discuss their craft. To host Dan Harlan's credit, he pretty much got out of the way and let Richard Osterlind and Bob Cassidy control much of what was happening.

One of my favorite moments in the lecture was when they were just talking about effects and their variations without performing. The two shared so many ideas and gave insights into the creative process, and it was truly a wonderful experience.

How they played off one another was great. In performing Paroptic Vision, they both demonstrated how an effect can be changed.

Bob demonstrated the inspiration for his Two Envelope Test (aka The White Dwarf) and how he performs it today.

Richard showed his latest version of Magician vs. Mentalist, and it was incredible.

It is amazing that these two seasoned pros continue to work on effects to make them even better.

To steal a phrase, this lecture was a thing of terrifying beauty.

This is a must-have DVD for the performer Report this review
Pro Privacy ON (login to see reviewer names) on January 4th, 2021
There are some great effects on this DVD but the gold is in the information about mentalism and performance.
If you are looking for a bunch of new tricks - don't buy this.
If you are a magician, not a mentalist - don't buy this.
This is for working mentalists and mentalists who are interested in learning performing mentalism.
