What will they teach?
In this dual Osterlind/Cassidy lecture, Richard and Bob will cover a lot of ground, both theoretical and practical. They'll be telling quite a few stories as well.
Richard Osterlind will be talking about his “roots” and those effects with which he began his career. Some of the items he plans to demonstrate and explain are:
Bob Cassidy is a repository of wisdom and this lecture will be packed with usable, real-world information that will resonate with magician and mentalist alike.
Bob plans on demonstrating various updates, angles, and variations on…
Who are they?
Richard Osterlind has been a top corporate performer for over 40 years. He has traveled around the world entertaining presidents, heads of state, foreign dignitaries, CEO executives, sports figures, newscasters and audiences from every walk of life. He has become a legend in the corporate world. Richard has also become known as one of the leading teachers of Magic and Mentalism. With 30 videos, over 20 books and hundreds of original effects to his credit, there is hardly a performer who has not been influenced by his work. His down-to-earth manner of performing, coupled with his original, audience-tested methods, has made him a favorite in the eyes of his peers. He has constantly shown his ability to take time-honored secrets and update them for the modern world and his instructional materials have probably made more money for mystery performers than any other living instructor.
When asked if his ability is a gift granted to only a few, Bob Cassidy will just shake his head and smile. He knows only too well that it took many years of hard work to develop the skills which seem to come to him so naturally on stage. While serving in the United States Navy as a communications specialist, he developed an act in which he displayed his virtually photographic memory and a remarkable sense of intuition. It was during this time that he began an in-depth study of the powers of the mind which led to the creation of the mentalism demonstrations he presents today. He began performing semi-professionally as a mentalist, stage mind-reader, and hypnotist in 1972. His first major gig was performing for Holland America Cruises, where he honed his skills and introduced entirely new concepts to the art of mentalism. Two hundred cruises later he would write three books on the principles he developed during this period of his performing career. He has since published and recorded a long list of works on Mentalism and the related arts. Bob co-founded the Psychic Entertainers Association in 1978, served as its president (1982-83), and was editor of its journal, “Vibrations,” through 1982. He was elected to honorary life membership in 1988 and was the first mentalist to be awarded its “Award for Creativity in Psychic Entertainment” in 1996. In 2011, Bob was the recipient of the Psychic Entertainers Association Dunninger Award, presented for distinguished professionalism in the performance of mentalism. In 2013, Bob was the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award at MINDvention in Las Vegas.

What about Bob! Report this review

Unlike those who loved it. I found that I spent a great deal of the arduous 4 and ¾ hours wishing Bob would stop talking over poor Richard. This is an example of how professional Richard is when he frequently gets half a sentence in and then gets talked all over by Bob and his opinions. Rather than slapping him, Richard holds his tongue and acts as a gentleman.8 of 9 magicians found this helpful.
I was expecting a great combination of experts and for the bits when Bob let Richard talk there was some great information. To be fair Bob did some good information too, however his need to constantly be the center of attention was so distracting that I found myself yelling “OH JUST SHUT UP BOB!” at my computer screen more than once.

The Interrupting Bob Report this review

Let me rephrase an old joke that pretty much sums up the whole lecture:3 of 4 magicians found this helpful.
The interrupting Bob.
Even when Richard started talking about his childhood, Bob kept butting in.
I watched this with a magic buddy and both of us felt like punching the screen several times - that's how annoying it was.
Dan should have done something to prevent this from happening all the time...

I agree with 'bad'. The lecture was touted as covering a list of effects but that didn't happen. I too was very annoyed with Mr. Cassidy and really felt Richard's pain in dealing with it all. Mr. Osterlind is really a class act and shouldn't have been put in that situation.3 of 4 magicians found this helpful.

This was a great lecture. Honestly, I very much enjoyed both of these gentlemen, but Bob totally shut Rich down. It was uncomfortable to watch. Richard has a lot of class and he didn't shut Bob up out of professionalism, but damn. It's not the Bob Cassidy lecture. Rich isn't your wife man.2 of 3 magicians found this helpful.

What a brilliant lecture.1 of 1 magicians found this helpful.
It will never cease to amaze me that people buy a lecture from a living legend (in this case two of them) and expect "trick-method" for 4 hours.
Guys, if that's you, you're kind-a missing the point. If you want to learn methods, read a few books and buy a few beginner DVDs. Once you've done that and you have a bit of experience, then come back and watch this. Why would you waste 4 hours with two master mentalists by NOT having them discuss the finer points of our art?
For serious students of mentalism I cannot recommend enought both of Richard's lectures and, yes, even Bob's inhebriated solo lecture. These 4 lectures (Richard x 2, Bob and Richard&Bob) are worth their time in gold and I would have happily paid more for them. (In fact, Penguin, if you ever read this, please increase the price of lectures from Bob and Richard in the future so that beginner's don't think its a cheap way of starting in mentalism).

I really enjoyed it. I think that I enjoyed it because I am at the stage where I am no longer trying find the next "best" effect. I'm looking to tweak my Mentalism performance and there is a lot of great advice regarding that.1 of 1 magicians found this helpful.
Now, there are effects performed in the download that I did like but I just loved listening to the stories and the wisdom of these two performers so much more.
For me personally this was the best £20 I have spent for a very long time and had it been £50 or £100 I would have still been very happy. 4 and a half hrs for £20 is insanely cheap.
I intend to purchase anything Bob Cassidy releases, he just gets it. My new saying when thinking about my Mentalism is "What Would Bob Cassidy Do?" (WWBCD)
I think this is a must for anyone period.

I was looking forward to this lecture but as others have commented there are some major issues. I watched this with a magic buddy and we were both not very happy - him more than me because he paid ;)1 of 1 magicians found this helpful.
The dual lecture didn't work well. Bob Cassidy did bulldoze Richard Osterlind as mentioned above. I guess some find it hard to share the limelight. It showed. I would have liked to hear more from Richard and wished Dan Harlan would have mediated more and kept them on schedule.
Somehow the agenda changed alot from what was scheduled. It's not that the lecture is awful but its not what was advertised. Someone else says out 3 of 12 tricks scheduled were taught. That sounds about right.
Everyone works hard for their money. I think when someone spends it on something extracurricular like magic lectures they want to know they are getting what they pay for.
This lecture was not as advertised and got a little annoying.

I have to agree with some of the negatives here. First off, I am a huge fan of both Cassidy and Osterlind. But I too wanted to reach through the screen and cover Bobs mouth. He continually cut Richard off and tried to overpower and control the whole lecture. It felt like Bob bullied Richard. That being said, there was a lot if valuable information covered. But sheesh ... It would have been nice to hear Richard speak. And finally, didn't care for the bait n switch. The lecture info said it would cover much more than it did.1 of 1 magicians found this helpful.
Not living up to what was advertised Report this review

Let me begin with the upside of the lecture. The discussion between the two great mentalists of our generation was entertaining and thought provoking. You could see the different thinkings from Bob and Richard as well as things they agree on.1 of 1 magicians found this helpful.
Now let me start what I didn't enjoy. As one of the commenters said I also saw Bob cutting Richard off and I applaud Richard for being the gentleman. I wish that Dan had intervened and gave Richard opportunities to express his opinions.
I purchased this lecture before it aired and I was promised they will go over more routines than they actually did. I can see that Penguin now has changed the description and state the routines they actually covered during the lecture. I feel like the discussions (or ramblings depending on how you see things) detracted from the main topics of the lecture and I feel that I did not get what I was promised. While one could discover some gems during these discussions I wish that I had received what was originally advertised. Some of these gems were covered in their previous lectures so some of them were not new to me.
The fact that Penguin cut down the list of routines covered by half seems to indicate Penguin acknowledges this problem.
I found the individual lectures by Richard and Bob fascinating but maybe it wasn't such a good idea to have two heroes in one book so to speak. I feel that the lecture lost direction and ended up wasting a lot of time going off tangent.
