From the Introduction by Roy Walton: "I am delighted to write some words of introduction to this major work on card magic by Peter Duffie. I have known the author since he was at school and over the years have seen his conjuring abilities progress at an astonishing rate. While his ideas cover the whole spectrum of magic, he excels when addressing himself to cards and I suspect, like Hofzinser, they may be his first love in magic. His work cannot be praised too highly. Any true lover of card magic will be delighted with the contents of this book and its study. The book will be an invaluable insight to under-standing the construction of fine magic. Books on card magic come and go, but this one will come and stay."

This book has a lot of solid material in it that I really enjoyed. You won't use all of the material in it; heck, you'll probably only use 5-10 items from it, but even so, its worth it.

I bought this book because of the trick "Dearly Departed", which is a wonderful multi-phased routine, but the palm off utility switch is also wonderful.

Some of the stuff is sleightless while some is a little more demanding, but it is by no means difficult.

Good tricks spoiled by misogny Report this review

I wanted to like this book, but was incredibly put off by (and troubled by) the misogynistic drawings throughout the book, depicting nude or semi-nude women in lurid poses, including at the feet of (clothed) male magicians. Frankly, when I first saw those pictures I assumed that the book had been published back in the Stone Age, or at least the 1940s. Imagine my surprise, then, to see that it was actually published in 1995!

I urge Penguin to stop selling effects and books that are demeaning to women. It's insulting to women, and to the magical arts at large.
