Who is he?

Paul Draper is a Comedy Mind-Reader who appears on A&E, HBO Comedy Fest at Caesar's Palace, Hallmark, Travel, HGTV and shows like Hell's Kitchen, Pawn Stars, Ghost Adventures, Mindfreak, and House Hunters. He has appeared with David Copperfield, Lance Burton, and Teller of Penn & Teller on the History Channel and hosted documentaries on Steven Spielberg's Poltergeist.

In Vegas, he's headlined for casinos including the Orleans Casino and Planet Hollywood and served for seven years as house magician at the Venetian. The International Magicians Society awarded Draper the Merlin Award for Worlds Best Corporate Performer.

Draper performs Off-Broadway, at Yale, USC, Apple, YPO, the Magic Castle in Hollywood, and London's Magic Circle.

Beyond his shows and lectures, Draper is frequently called upon as an expert in medical anthropology. With the Society for the Anthropology of Consciousness, Draper studies Native American ghost dancers, South American cannibals, and spiritualists.

Draper’s act was tightly scripted, charming mentalism based on classic methods. He had a through-line weaving the effects together thematically; he also had a thread connecting the technical aspects of the performance, which he leaves to the viewer, to figure out (revealed during the explanation). By the end of the 25 minute performance, we know his political leanings, religious background, interests and that he has a good sense of humor. It’s not every performance of mentalism that reveals so much in terms of character and personality, and I hope other performers will take note. As for the mentalism, I would characterize it as simple and strong. Not overly procedural for the most part (a few transfers of critical bits of paper from hand to hand are the only exceptions that come to mind). As is not uncommon in this branch of magic, most of the show can be purchased in WalMart, CVS or even a well-stocked petrol station, save a few small magic-specific items. While the majority of mental acts I’ve seen on Penguin leave me cold, this is one of a few that I found engaging and entertaining.

Between this & Mr. Draper’s other Penguin Lecture, you have all you need to make a living as a mentalist. In this lecture you learn everything from method structure to show structure. This is an ACT that is loaded with tons of usable, practical routines. Even though you probably won’t use every piece or the entire show as is, you will definitely learn how to structure your own show, or get ideas for new material. The principles taught can be applied to create your own affects and Your own show. Do yourself a favor and make this investment! FIVE STARS

A great, engaging act and amazingly clear presentation. The two themes (overt and covert) were absolutely on it. One (simple!) suggestion was worth the whole subscription, and I'm looking at a particular gimmick in a whole new way.

I’ve been doing magic professionally for more than 50 years. As I’ve gotten older, it’s become more challenging to carry lots of equipment and heavy props. I’m looking for solid material that uses minimal props. I also want to freshen up my show with some new material that’s upbeat, engaging, mysterious and meaningful for the audience.

Paul Draper’s “Live Show” Penguin lecture gave me all that and more. It’s a classic “lost luggage” show, but this material is likely to be stronger than some of your existing material. Using paper, pens, paper currency, fortune cookies and even a bottle of vodka (!), Paul creates a show full of practical, effective mental magic.

But the real secrets here aren’t the tricks. You’ll watch a master showman give a clinic in performing a visually appealing, dynamic, funny and fun MENTALISM show. Paul’s engagement with the audience, his enthusiasm, his sense of humor are all worth noting. But you’ll also see great show construction, seamless transitions, and how to build to a standing ovation. There’s so much more here than just tricks.

I highly recommend this lecture, not only for anyone who wants to learn how to make the most with the fewest props, but also for anyone who simply wants to make their show better.

An Eye-Opening Example of Character Report this review

I haven't laughed at a mentalism show since the first one I ever saw. The other day, I bought this lecture on a whim and the show brought me some much-needed joy. The act and the lecture are very tight, but the value you get is immense. For me the most helpful part was seeing how Paul applied the traits of his character to make everything between the routines as entertaining as possible. Highly recommended!

An up and coming mentalist may be tempted to give this material short shrift because of the lack of batteries and remote controls, but listen carefully to every word Paul says during the explanation. Where as other performers spend hours explaining how do their moves, but purposefully withhold the helpful tidbits that can only be discovered from experience, or "The Real Work" as it's sometimes called, Paul gives you *everything*. Why the method, different choices you can make in different situations for the method, the jokes, why the jokes, when not to do those jokes, perspectives on character and cultural awareness (and every audience is its own culture), and he does it succinctly and clearly. But, if you don't pay attention to it, you'll miss it!

The best part is, this act has material you can draw from for your own A-material or can be used to save you should your act get lost or stolen and you now need emergency B-material.

It's well explained, with show it's only a 90 minute video. It's practical. It will give you ideas for other performance pieces, and even the effects you won't use will have good thinking in the explanations that you can learn from.

Paul does what I wish more mentalists did: he makes mentalism fun, amusing, entertaining and exciting. Because his act requires less set up than most, he moves seamlessly from one trick to the next. Another great thing that he does is give himself and the act an intro, which effectively foreshadows the entire act. Why don't more magicians do this?

His methods are top notch and it's clear he's read and done some innovations on the best in the business.

This is how you do an effective platform act and still have exciting props that play big for 20-70 people. The whole act is delightful and I don't understand why more mentalists don't do things the way he does: always fun and exciting with an engaging story and props you can ACTUALLY SEE.

I've seen a lot of mentalism, and a lot of it can be anti-climactic. But Paul understands how to be a showman with mentalism and how to get gold out of the smallest patch of land.

Well done.
