"Frank Deville is hands down, one of the best magical performers in the world right now. His magic is classic, technical, and fooling as all hell. You are going to learn a ton. This is my early favorite for lecture of the year." -Nick Locapo

"Frank's 6 bill repeat is the best I've ever seen."- Alain Nu

What will he teach?

Rope Through Neck- An extremely visual effect with an ordinary prop. The Rope Through Neck is a classic for a reason. You'll learn not only how to pull a rope through your own neck, but also a special way to be able to have the audience pull on the rope to prove the rope is around your neck before it safely passes through.

Dye Tube- Frank teaches his personal routine of this classic effect. You push a white handkerchief into your fist and it comes out red. He teaches some unique transfers, steals, and a gorgeous production where one silk appears as the other one is tied into a knot. He also teaches his unique method for showing a half dyed silk without a half dyed handkerchief.

Cup and Ball- A practical ungimmicked single cup routine that ends with multiple final loads. Plus the real secrets behind working cups on the streets, and how to make your own set of cups and balls that don't look like silly props.

5 Bill Repeat- A classic stage effect. This variation on five six card repeat uses ordinary money, a character driven story, and a lot of hard work to create a reputation making effect.

All Backs Routine- A card is fairly selected and then when you go to find it, the deck is suddenly all backs. This handling not only justifies the all backs routine, but also looks incredibly fair. At the end of the routine the deck corrects itself and then only the chosen card is still all backs before being magically corrected.

In the Hands Triumph- The classic effect where the cards are shuffled face up and face down and the deck fixes itself is taken off the table and performed in the hands in a way where your audience swears that the deck is truly mixed.

Targeted Boomerang Fan Catch- Not only does Frank teach how to catch a thrown card in a fan, but also the secret to catching that card between two other selected cards and it works every time.

Sleight Section- For the sleight section Frank teaches his short card control, the Top Card Cover Pass and an in the hands false riffle shuffle.

Birthday Card Trick- Perfect for every one, even if they're not celebrating a birthday.

Who is he?

Frank DeVille grew up in northern VA, just outside of Washington D.C. At the age of 17, he discovered a love and natural knack for magic. Within a few weeks time, he was performing on the street, bringing in enough money to pay his way through George Mason University, where he earned his B.F.A. in theater.

Highly acclaimed by his peers, his esteemed awards include the 2008 Peoples Choice Award, 2008 and 2009 winner of the “Robert Escher Close Up and Parlor Magic Competition,” and in 2009 he was awarded first place in the “Comedy Caravan’s Battle of the Hands.” Watch Frank perform and you will quickly understand why Alain Nu, star of TLC's TV series "The Mysterious World of Alain Nu" said "Frank's 6 bill repeat is the best I've ever seen."

Frank has a very diverse, eclectic show. He has taken classic illusions and magic tricks and devised completely unique methods of performance that often fool fellow magicians. Frank's degree in theater has taught him the art of improvisation, keeping the audience on the edge of their seats or doubled over laughing. Watching him in action, it is obvious that he has mastered the art of bonding with audiences of all ages.

First I want to mention that I had the privilege of seeing Frank perform live for several years on the boardwalk at Seaside Heights, NJ. It was one of the highlights of my trips to the beach knowing that I would see him perform each evening. And for me as an up and coming magician at the time it was a big inspiration to watch him perform sleight-of-hand in front of a random audience. When I saw that he was doing a lecture I knew I had to get it. He has a wealth of real world experience busking and making a living doing it. In this lecture you will learn a variety of practical material and gain some nice tips and subtleties that will make you a better performer. As a card magician I really enjoyed his card material and that might be my biggest take away for me. But his work on the Dye Tube was amazing and it was something I always wanted to do and didn’t really know where to start. Dan Harlan considered it a masterclass and I would agree. And his 5 Bill Repeat was great as well. Maybe in a future lecture he can go into more detail about the ins and outs of busking as well as explain his Multiple Selection Routine which he performs at his street shows (not in this lecture). But all and all I would say read the description of each trick and if it sounds interesting to you that’s exactly what you will learn and more. I recommend that you check it out.

I find this lecture hard to rate:
*The effects are solid and practical, but readily found in the library

*The instruction would be poor if not for Dan Harlan asking the right questions and providing cues & prompts.

*You could either learn the effects and discover the nuances on your own, or you can listen to Frank Deville. Frank claims the touches are his own, but you would discover them if you played with any of the effects long enough. Nothing is revolutionary; it is the quantum to make the effect polished.

*The effects are strong and you could have a very successful, entertaining career performing nothing but what you see here. If you like what you see in the promo reel, then get the lecture. Between Frank and Dan, the lecture is a great primer on everything shown.

You'll rarely find me offering a review anyway but I must here. This is the first lecture I can remember in recent memory where it actually inspires me to study, learn and put a new effect into my real-world set-list.

I've been looking for the Holy Grail of an All-Backs routine. Sure, I seen many, studied most, but have never been motivated to perform it. Frank's version is THE way everyone should do it. No, no new methods but it's the approach and the nonchalant delivery with some great additions of standard sleights that's not normally associated with an All Backs routine that is thoroughly thought out and timed perfectly. Some purists will say that a selected card revelation shouldn't be a part of an All-Backs routine. That's B.S.. Most purists aren't full-time pros. I will listen to a pro.

Even if you only learn this one routine, the purchase is worth it. BTW, the rest of his pro-advise and asides are worth an ear as well! I've never heard of him before, but now I'm a Deville convert. Amen.

I think Frank's lecture is outstanding. His techniques are superb, his patter is top drawer, and his advice is very, very practical.

I have one complaint, however. I think Dan Haren's participation is completely unnecessary. To me, Dan wants to show-off his experience and interrupts Frank's flow. Frank is patient with Dan's interruptions and gracious with Dan's comments. I saw no value-added by having Dan on this video. He's a distraction.

Frank is really cool, and this energy is so important to draw people in. After I finished the lecture I really wanted to go see him live because he's so easy about everything when he performs.

So this lecture is already at a good pace. Add to that the fact ALL of the tricks here are awesome and practical - and this is one of the best lectures I've seen. I really hope Frank brings out this dye tube because it's AWESOME, and I'm working on the all-backs routine which is amazing.

Get this. Really. Now.

Something Great for Everyone Report this review

What a great lecture, he explains everything in great detail without boring you. He does effects I have done for years, but his little tweaks really improve them. He does a rope through neck where an audience member checks it just before you pull it through. An non-chopped, chop cup routine. The best dye tube routine I have seen yet. A great insight into cups and balls. A five bill repeat which makes sense. Excellent advice for buskers and of course a series of card effects to include an easier boomerang card catch. If you don't get this, thanks, that means I will be the only one here adding some of his great routines, to my own.
