Straight from the working repertoire of one of the most in-demand working magicians in the world, this handling of the Chicago Opener has a transforming ink kicker ending that your audience will never see coming. The best part is that the custom-made gimmick can be examined at the end of the trick. This is Her Card His Card by Cody Fisher.

Here’s what happens:

A member of the audience selects a card, and she can then return it to the deck. The magician tells the audience it will be easy to find her card because it is marked. The deck is spread, and the words “Her Card” appear in large bold letters on the back of a card that turns out to be the selection. The card is placed in the magician’s top pocket, and a second card is selected by a different member of the audience, and he returns it to the deck. The magician looks for his card in the deck but can’t find it. Then the magician takes the card that has been sitting in their top pocket and shows that it has transformed into the second selection. Not only has it transformed on the front, but the ink on the back has transformed to read “His Card.” Everything is examinable.

In addition to the gimmick that makes the ink transformation possible, Cody teaches you multiple routines from his working repertoire. Her Card His Card is extremely easy to do. The clever gimmick not only allows you to transform the ink on the back of the card, but Cody teaches you a visual transformation your audience will love. Make your next card Her Card His Card by Cody Fisher.

Great effect with some warnings Report this review

This is a great effect. The gimmick is simple to use and presents a mind-blowing finish! If I had one complaint, it would be the distance to your spectators needs to be at least 4-5 feet or you can clearly see the gimmick on the red bicycle card back. But if presented well and you can keep a safe distance to avoid being caught, then it's a first rate trick. Only one person noticed the gimmick but they were very close to me. It definitely works best in low-light table hopping or street magic. I've used it at bars/clubs as well and the finale always gets a huge response!
I love the concept and I'll continue to think of ways I can repurpose the gimmick to do other presentations and routines.

I like the multiple magic moments. Easy to do, so you can concentrate on the presentation. Fast reset. Only small difficulty is you shouldn't perform for the same audience twice, because one of the cards selected remains the same. You shouldn't perform the same trick twice, anyway! Otherwise great trick with fun built in.

Any time couples are involved this is a go to trick. I do a lot of private house parties and restaurant magic and I have moved this trick up to the front of the line for presentation when there is a couple present. It is easy to do and the gimmick is well made, and lines up perfectly. Cody has come up with a great gimmick. I keep the gimmick in a card deck which keeps it for the future after a very short and easy reset. Good for a table with Mom and Dad or Grandpa and Grandma when the kids are present. They get it too.

I’ll admit, I’m a huge fan of Cody Fisher.

There have been a LOT of variations of Red Hot Mama/Chicago Opener over the years. Most of them have clever ideas, but muddy the effect rather than improving it.

While this won’t replace the version I’ve been using since the 70’s, I will be using it when the conditions and audience are right.

“Her Card His Card” adds a surprising twist while keeping the effect clear, simply by using a different “marked” card and a simple move.

I like it!

Let me start off by saying this is a new take on a classic, the red hot mama. You get all the gimmicks you need for the effect, just supply your own deck of cards. You do not need a sharpie, like I thought I needed. Everything comes ready to use. Cody goes over every sleight, which is super easy to do, in a clear way. This trick is perfect for couples. Definitely gets big reactions. You can hand the card out at the end for examination. People will ask how you changed the ink. After you do this trick, you can go into you next card trick, such as an ambitious card routine or a card to pocket, because you put the Her Card His Card gimmick in your pocket or card box after. Super easy to reset too. Simply reset the gimmick and a matching card in the proper order. It's a very clever take on an old favorite of mine. Hopefully it will be your new favorite too.

If you have good audience management and good sleight of hand, this trick can fool the masses. I docked it a star because of a sleight discrepancy (imo) that can be caught if not handled correctly. Overall, I'd definitely say it's worth buying it because the ending comes with a bang!
