"Katrina is a pro. I've worked on stage with her, improvising magic in an impossible situation and we killed it. She crushed it. I'll go into showbiz battle with her by my side any day!" -Penn Jillette (Penn and Teller)

"Hey Katrina. I caught your lecture yesterday and I wanted to tell you that you did an amazing job. Lots of practical info delivered in a breezy, fun style." -Ken Weber (Maximum Entertainment)

"I thought your lecture was really strong. Lots of great info that I am sure inspired people to do better virtual shows. I got a lot from your lecture for my own shows. So glad you are killing it in LA. I can see now why you are working so much." -David Kaye (Silly Billy)

"When it comes to virtual shows Katrina knows what she is talking about. Her experience and knowledge shines through and she makes it all highly entertaining to watch." -Paul Romhany (Vanish Magazine)

"Your prediction effect was brilliant! I saw an online show where you did the same thing with pets and I was totally fooled. The concept is solid, powerful, and finally an ENTERTAINING prediction effect. I was seriously blown away by your talent. Between your awesome effects, likable character, engaging presentation skills, and really natural sense of humor, you are a force to be reckoned with." -Richard Sanders

What will she teach?

Selection- This is the trick that fooled Penn Jilette on “Fool Us”. A completely customizable magic trick that works well for both kids and adults, as well as virtually and in person! An audience member is asked to help you divide a stack of cards/photos into two separate piles (similar to out of this world) the twist comes at the end when they have an entirely free choice of which card/photo to specifically choose. It is revealed that the magician knew exactly what card/photo they would pick ahead of time. I will touch on some handling tips and teach you the basics of how to make the gimmicks.

Callback Invisible Deck- Make a reference/Joke at the beginning of your set. Halfway through the show the magician does a standard invisible deck routine but with a twist. On the bottom of the card they chose is a message that references your joke from earlier. Not only was their card facing the opposite direction, but is the only one to have that message/word on it. Totally customizable!

Chocolate Appearance and Disappearance- Using a handkerchief the audience members help you make a single small object appear. such as a chocolate, a candy, a ring, a quarter, anything that’s smallish sized!
several more of that small object appear. make a single one of the objects disappear in a humorous and engaging way. There are two versions of the routine -one for children and one for adults.

Foreshadowed Mysterious Envelope Prediction- The Magician asks an audience member to think of an object. In a very silly way they attempt to read the spectators mind only to fail. It is revealed later that the magician predicted the thought of item and had a photo printed of the item inside the envelope the entire show. Works as a wonderful climax to a virtual show or an in person event! This one really shocks people.

The Personalized Message Switch- Now you can personalize any show you do in a quick and easy way! The magician reveals they have a piece of paper. Written on each side is “front” and “back”. The magician does a few folds of the paper only to open it up and reveal a magical personalized message has appeared. Takes less than 3 minutes to set up for each show and is perfect for all ages. Two different versions of this will be taught -both a smaller version for virtual/close up and also a larger version for stage/parlor.

As far as magic is concerned, there is nothing here that is new or particularly innovative. That's fine. Sometimes we can learn a lot about standard effects from a seasoned professional. But Katrina is not that either.

She does seem well-suited to entertain five-year-olds, and more power to her. That is not a situation I would be able to handle. But if you want insight into children's magic, you'd be much better off looking into David Kaye's work.

But Katrina also does magic for adults, and recognizes the differences in the audiences. Early on she mentions how she changes her tone for adult shows. But I've seen both her adult and kids shows, and she treats her audience members like children regardless. You could reasonably consider this lecture a "do as I say, not as I do" situation. She's saying the right things, but again, it's nothing new.

Her explanations for tricks, such as they are, are not especially good. For example, she spends a long time showing in great detail how to move a bill from one hand to the other. But at the end she realizes she's been placing it incorrectly and rushes through the correct handling without an explanation. Not that it needed much explanation in the first place, but it shows a lack of preparedness.

I'll be charitable and chalk that up to inexperience with magic lectures. What she has been lecturing on the past year is Zoom shows, particularly the business side of booking them. She's definitely familiar with this topic and it is easily the most valuable part of the lecture. Unfortunately it's just the last 20 minutes of the 3.5 hour runtime, and I can't say the quick bullet point overview is worth the cost.

I feel Katrina's true calling is to be an agent or promoter, and magic is getting in her way. She definitely knows how to work with clients, but her magic seems like a side project. If she had a 90-minute lecture on her business tips, going in-depth into how she handles her marketing, etc, that would probably be worthwhile. I do hope she'll focus her energies where her talents lie, as I think she'd be much more successful staying on the business side.

If you are interested in a few classical tricks like: pen through bill, 10 seconds floating bill , invisible deck, devil hank chocolate production, simple mentalist trick and Chatelain like gaff card matrix, this lecture is for you. If you are looking for originality and lot of magic pass your turn. But if you are planning to do a virtual magic show for kids you'll get a lot of commercial advice.
Anyway please bring back the talentuous but discreet Dan Harlan as Mr Tait seems to consider that he has to comment on everything and 99% of is talk is of no interest

I hate to give a generous 3 stars as she is young, trying hard, and seems very nice. But I have to be truthful to others. Nothing much new here and actually a bit painful to watch. She will get much better I am sure. I wish her all the best.

Practical usable material Report this review

Enjoyed. Katrina has tackled an arena in virtual shows which I find intimidating. And while her material is not always what I'd see myself performing I learned a lot seeing how she translates what she does to the screen. Her business advice is also solid and it's clear she's a worker with her head screwed on her shoulders. Definitely worth checking out.

Virtually Ideal! Report this review

As someone who is not very technologically-inclined, I did not fully embrace and capitalize on the virtual magic show trend that occurred during the pandemic. Sure, I performed a little for groups via Zoom and watched A LOT of Zoom shows. But, for the most part, I dedicated my time toward other projects and pursuits.

Katrina, however, was not only able to successfully tap into this virtual show market, she was one of the few magical performers to dominate it! Having met Katrina briefly at a past Genii convention, I was aware of her career and throughout the months and even years that COVID negatively affected many working magicians, she was able to consistently book online shows to keep her business going and even thriving as she reached new and different audiences.

Magical Katrina’s Penguin Lecture focuses mainly on performing virtual magic for kids. Although, the routines she performs and teaches are very versatile and throughout she showcases how they can each be adapted, customized, and personalized to different audiences and performing situations. If you are an experienced performer, you may recognize some of the simple magic Katrina uses to engage her audiences such as Pen Through Bill, Floating Dollar, and Ultra Mental / Invisible Deck. It would be easy to dismiss these effects as standard and cliche’. However, Katrina offers some good insight into these more traditional and commercially available tricks including how to adapt them to a virtual platform and highlight their visual impact!

She describes a few signature pieces including “Selection” which was featured on Penn & Teller’s Fool Us. Katrina explains this routine in-depth including its history, construction, and of course how to customize the props to your needs - which is the major theme throughout her lecture that I really appreciate.

Her “Appearing & Vanishing Chocolate Trick”, I admit, did not fit me personally but I certainly can see its appeal to a younger audience - afterall it’s chocolate! Plus, Katrina’s “Photo Mindreading / Mysterious Foreshadowed Envelope” was a fun example of the type of clever construction and handling you can take advantage of while working within virtual environments. It incorporates technology within technology (you’ll have to watch the lecture to see what I mean) and is a seemingly impossible effect that plays very well virtually!

It may seem silly, but one of my best take-aways from this lecture was Katrina’s handling for the tipless bill switch. For years, I’ve used Jarle Leirpol’s handling of this effect from his book/video Pocket Power. Yet, the way in which he flips the bill to show both sides to be ungimmicked always gave me trouble. Katrina’s handling to cleanly show both sides of a bill gave me a useful alternative that I’m sure I’ll be using.

It was clear that Katrina was able to bring a lot of her existing performance experience and business sense into her virtual shows and this Penguin Lecture. The effects were all ones that she obviously has performed countless times. She has a great command & understanding of her audiences, especially when it comes to interacting with children and keeping them engaged as was evident in some of her virtual show footage. Being conscious of your audiences’ age, interests, and life experiences is something that many performers overlook. This is where Katrina excels! And the real value of her lecture is in how to take her magic and the magic you already do and customize it for different audiences and situations.

Don't Let This Lecture Zoom Past You! Report this review

Katrina’s lecture is a live act of a Zoom show for children. If you don’t perform for children don’t overlook this as many of the ideas and routines can be adapted to other audiences. The overall theme of this lecture is adaptability not just to the virtual show platform but taking the magic you do and customizing it to fit your clients best.  Yes, you do see Katrina perform and explain well know effects like pen through bill, a floating bill, and devil hank production. They are all explained well and credits are given for everything. Many magicians gloss over this but I love it. Erik does a great job guiding the lecture.

The big highlights for me personally included the callback invisible deck, selection, foreshadowed mysterious envelope, and business tips. The invisible deck plays well in a Zoom format but the idea of customizing an I.D. with a client’s name or for a call back in an in-person show is great! The selection routine is probably what Katrina is known for best. This again is super versatile and customizable. With a list of objects, a performer can really show their personality. The method is clever, the plot simple and the impact is powerful. I’ll definitely be making one of these up! The foreshadowed mysterious envelope was not what I first thought it would be. It uses technological and sleight-of-hand methods to create a great effect. I predict we will see this method being used a lot due to its limitless possibilities.

The business tips Katrina shared in the last part of the lecture were great! You can tell this is an area where she excels and I wish more time had been spent on this aspect of the lecture. You can see clearly the insight she shares has been learned in the real world and the tips given are actionable and practical.

With Zoom shows fading out and only continuing for certain markets I don’t know if every magician would jump to view this lecture. However, don’t overlook this material. It’s sound, effective, and allows for a lot of customization. It’s all tested in the real world and  I'm sure we'll be seeing more of Katrina in the future.

The business tips for booking zoom shows are good, like returning a prospect's phone call. You've probably heard the tips before but the tips are good and it's probably something you need to hear. Katrina books a lot of zoom shows because she follows these basic tips (like answering the phone) and because of her connection to other busy magicians who give their lead overflow to her. This has made Katrina an experienced kids magician.

Having seen her perform mentalism for an adults crowd (in real life) I do agree with another reviewer that, regardless of the material or audience, Katrina's persona is "children's magician." Despite presenting some ideas as if they were her own without mentioning the source, Katrina gave good tips if you are performing magic for children. If you want to do a children's magic show this is worth watching.
