From Tyro to Adept

“It is my intention to give, in the following pages, such instruction as shall enable the merest tyro to become an adept in the art of Legerdemain, providing that a due degree of attention is given and a reasonable amount of practice undertaken." - Edwin Sachs

In these lessons, Kainoa will discuss some of his favorite ideas in the realm of close-up magic, focusing on key skills and concepts that will help magicians of all levels expand their performance abilities.

EZ Coins--The first class will look at the very basics of coin magic and how you can take the simplest techniques and turn them into powerful effects. While some of these effects are geared toward the beginner, many of them also have applications for the veteran performer.

The Retention Pass--Much is made of this vanish and with good reason: a skilled retention pass can create an incredible amount of conviction for audience members. Students will explore a variety of techniques, from the standard to the obscure, as they study the theory behind and applications of this vanish.

Hanging Coins--One of Kainoa’s favorite effects, there is a lot to learn from the Hanging Coins plot, where three (and sometimes four) coins seem to cleanly vanish into and reappear from the air. Various methods for working with the plot, some simple and some challenging, will be discussed, and students will have the opportunity to mix and match methods that best suit their abilities.

Walking Around with Cards--What….card magic?!? Heck, yeah, people. Kainoa will share the practical “system” that he uses for card work while performing table-hopping and strolling magic. He will explore a mix of well-known and odd effects that have become standards in his act while also discussing some of the general issues at stake when performing close-up magic.

Attendees should provide six coins, a deck of cards, and an opaque silk.
