"David Regal's magic is just sensational, and the presentations are equally ingenious. He's fooled me, surprised me, made me laugh, and made me wonder. Most of all, he made me wonder where all these great ideas come from. Now every magician will know. They come from this book."
- Jim Steinmeyer

"Brilliance in action, David gives you his real world - real work."
- Jeff McBride

"I have had the privilege of experiencing Davids fine performances and lectures. David has the insightful understandings of magical theories that I have heard Professor Dai Vernon preach on for years. He understands what makes for good magic."
- Richard Turner

"In the UK, 'REGAL' is a brand of cigarette. David's material relates to this in two ways; It is of highest quality and it KILLS."
- R. Paul Wilson

"Very few tricks give me the feeling that 'In Darkness' gave me. In short it blew me away."
- Dean Dill

"The 'One=hand Half Pass' completely flew by me...I simply had no clue, David has given the brethren a diabolical new tool to create miracles."
- Roger Klause

"Please ignore David's 'Change for a five'. People feel abused and mentally violated after seeing it."
- Derek Delgaudio

"After reading three coin effects, 'Consolidation', 'An Attractive Vanish', and a 'A Quiet Good-bye', I can honestly say that they are stunning, cunning, and diabolical."
- Mike Gallo

A Classic! And classic Regal! Report this review

Didn't buy it through Penguin. I actually pre-ordered it through David Regal's site. The book is lovely and has some really terrific magic in it. Not just cards and coins. There is a pleasing variety of appealing close up magic. Everything is top notch. Regal is a modern master. In fact, if you like modern close up magic, then you should have all of Regal's books. His 1st collection, "Star Quality - The Magic of David Regal", is out of print but now available in "Lorayne: Classic Collection Vol 4." This also includes "The Magic Book" and "The Card Classics of Ken Krenzel." It's , but it includes 3 classics. However, I was unhappy with some of the editing. Especially, some exclusions of material from the original text. Also, don't forget "Clos-Up and Personal" and "Constant Fooling 1 & 2." It's all great.

Not often have I been immediately overwhelmed by a book like I have with David Regal's 'Approaching Magic'. All I can say is to buy it, raise the open side towards the sky, leaving its spine on the table (it's a 500 page monster head) and flip slowly through the pages from front to back. You will experience a buzz from doing that alone. You will see passing masterworks that are now at your disposal, to unfold to the public and make them look at you with the perplex expression you so desire, wondering if you truly are a wizard or something. You're not of course, you're simply a magician learning to become one. If Renoir was a magician, he'd been David Regal. I recommend getting this book while it's still available.

This is full of such great stuff it is ridiculous. $75.00 for this book is a steal. I think David's magic is great, but I think he excels at parlor type magic and this book is full of great effects. There are also wonderful close up things and just too much good stuff to talk about. There is a good amount of theory and advice as well. This has been a go to book for me that has been worth 10x the cost.

I have all of Davids books and everyone is packed with usable material. This is a large book and has great material - His card at any number is great. The mentalism section is worth the price of the book. There is card , coin, paper money and more. Each effect is a lesson in how David approaches magic along with thought provoking essays. This is one of those books that is a must for the serious performer.

What a beautiful book and worth every penny - it is really well written.

My only (mild) critique is that I wish the photos were in colour - I would have paid more.

In fact, the book is so good, that if you do print a colour version, I'll buy that one too.

Great Book Report this review

I love all the books I own from David Regal. He has such a creative mind and it shows in his works. Most of the book is made up of card magic, which includes tricks with advance setup, packet tricks and self-working card magic. I like how he has the title for each trick followed by the Effect, what is needed, the set-up and then the steps to perform each trick. He also includes his patter which gives you a starting point to make it your own style.

Also would like to thank Penquin for having the best prices on books.

This book by the wonderful David Regal takes you into his mind, not from an output perspective but from the paths his mind takes in regards to the art of magic and it's logical direction(s) and diversions and resulting performance pieces. It's a thick book, packed with magical nibblets throughout.
