"Mark Elsdon is a renaissance man in magic. He is equally adept at inventing, performing, creating, and theorizing about magic. He consults for television, lectures, and performs, all with equal proficiency. And, he's one of my favorite guys to watch." - Joshua Jay

"Mark Elsdon is on a very short list of magic and mentalism's most creative innovators. When Mark lets me in on what he's working on, I'm ALWAYS fooled badly and find something to add to my own work." - Bill Abbott

"Mark Elsdon is my secret weapon. Well, he was until I told you about him. He's the first, and usually only, person I turn to when I get stuck. Why? Because he constantly finds unique and practical solutions to creating astonishing magic. The man's brain is a goldmine of quality ideas and material. And when not solving Rubik's cubes, one handed... whilst wearing a blindfold, he's out in the real world presenting this stuff live on stage and for performers on TV. Mark does that rare thing and gives away so much in a lecture. So take a notepad and pay attention." - Colin McLeod

"Mark is one of the most creative magicians or mentalists I know, with a depth of knowledge and an inherent understanding of what can turn a simple trick into a powerful mind-**** for laymen." - Quentin Reynolds

"Mark gives one of the most inspiring lectures I’ve ever seen. I envy you seeing him for the first time." - Marc Oberon

"I've known Mark for over 15 years, he is a fantastic performer, his effects are clear of clutter or too much process, something he taught me to reduce years ago. He always has a fresh angle on classics and creates some of the best commercial effects I've seen. I love his creations but also love watching him perform. You are in for a treat." - Marc Spelmann

What will he teach?

In his second Penguin LIVE lecture, Mark Elsdon teaches wholly original magic and mentalism, PLUS the techniques and methods used behind the scenes to achieve maximum impact and affect for his audiences. This includes:

Walkaround card and coin magic Practical, commercial material that can be performed under any conditions.

Close-up mentalism For those times when you want your performance to have more resonance and leave a lasting impression on people.

Stand-up mentalism Short on process and long on entertainment. Focusing on the interaction with the audience, this time-tested material is ready to go straight into your act.

Conversation As Mentalism A whole section on his critically-acclaimed material which includes killer mentalism effects that you can perform anytime, anyplace and without any props! These effects and more have been designed with one outcome in mind – to amaze whoever you are talking to without the aid of any gadgets, gizmos or gimmicks.

Who is he?

This is the straw that broke this mentalists back.
For a while, I would buy most of what Mark released.
No more.
I'm sailing past annoyed, straight into feeling like I'm supporting someones over inflated ego.

This one should be a pass.

Mark Elsdon is one of my favorite creators/mentalists. His first Penguin Live was fantastic, one of the best ever. I had high hopes for the sequel. Man, was I let down.

First, there are way too many card trick taking up the first half. Do we really need to see Mark do Out of this World based on someone else's handling? No. He also divines a card based on a *****. While the sleight is reasonably clever, it's just a nothing effect. Joshua Quinn did the same things using a ****** deck.

He also does a "calling the cards" effect that uses a ***** and a ****** deck. Yawn.

He does a prediction using a **** wallet. His sage advice was to not mention the word "wallet." Most of us who use a tricked-out wallet already know that you don't call attention to the heat. He spends a lot of time on this.

He does a magic trick with coffee shop punch cards that is based on an idea by Richard Kaufman and Derek Dingle, a card effect that I remember from back in the day. It's not mentalism.

He also spends a lot of time talking to Dan Harlan about a performance art piece that he did where he could only say 100 words over 10 tricks in 10 minutes. He tells us that mentalists talk too much and explain too much. How true. Snore.

Fortunately, he moves over to his forte, equivoque, and for a while, things pick up with his discussion of some new uses.

But when he moves to his coveted conversation as mentalism pieces, there is nothing new to behold. In fact, the last trick that he does is based on Al Mann's The Kolophon that he doesn't credit. Again, nothing new to see here.

Overall, I'm crushed. I hope that Mark gets that equivoque book done soon. This lecture was not up to his high standards.

What a bummer! I really liked ME but this is empty like his book Mentalism Reveals 3 that he collected the $$$ on several years ago and still hasn't delivered. Not sure what happened to him. His first lecture was great but like so much else from him this leaves you wanting. Hopefully, he'll get some inspiration and get back on his game! Until then, don't waste your money.

Some really pedestrian card tricks and a couple good card tricks. Lots of card tricks. Great if you have closeup audiences who like lots of card tricks. Nice out of this world card trick.

Phoning it in... Report this review

Personally, I did not enjoy this very much. I felt that many of the effects were phoned in. Smallish effects, applying well known principles, of a kind you might expect in a $10 download. Perhaps that's related to the fact that, as ME explained at great length, he doesn't presently have his heart in performing mentalism right now.

Have to say I'm a little bit disappointed by this second lecture. The first one is one of the best I have ever watched. The second one is full of nice material but nothing special, lots of very common routine in mentalism, nothing new and most of the method have been already explained in the first lecture which is so much better! Knowing all the clever tricks Mark created all over the years I was sure he would have done a powerful second lecture. Unfortunately it didnt happen. Buy the first one now. It's amazing. Avoid this one. Sorry but I'm just trying to be honest.

Not as good as the first one Report this review

Was looking forward to this, but I was a little disappointed as the material was somewhat average and Mark spent a lot of time speaking about his ten show, which would have been fine if his effects were good but they felt a little recycled. He also performed a direct mindreading effect, but there was really nothing he added to it - other than his thoughts on not mentioning the word wallet. I was looking forward to his conversation as mentalism section, I'm afraid this disappointed as well. They were ok but the one that used a phone was very transparent in method.
All in all I gave this 3 stars as there are some ok effects and mark has some interesting thoughts and ideas that are defiantly worth listening to - but if you're looking for a Mark Elsdon lecture get his first one MUCH Much better in my opinion and way better value for money and you'll learn some way more interesting tricks that you'll actually use.
Sorry mark!

Great but not quite as good as No. 1 Report this review

This is a really great lecture and I really enjoyed it. There are some real gems in here, especially spectator led red-black separation which is one of the star effects in his show "10". The lecture wasn't as long, or as jam-packed as his first lecture and some techniques & effects were based off things taught in lecture No. 1. However, it is well worth purchasing and I'm sure you will enjoy!

Another great lecture from Mark Elsdon Report this review

I am an enormous fan of Mark Elsdon - he puts out some great, usable material with simple methods. His discussion on equivoque in his previous Penguin lecture completely revolutionised my thinking on the subject, so I had high expectations for this lecture.

Luckily these expectations were met - another 3.5 hours of golden Elsdon thinking. He showed us an energetic stage performance of his On the Mark effect, multiple mentalism with playing cards tricks, a fantastic way of doing Out of This World which involves the entire audience as well as a selection of 'Conversation as Mentalism' pieces, all of which are impromptu and entertaining.

I thoroughly enjoyed this lecture - Mark was on top form, explained everything expertly and had some interesting discussions with Dan Harlan about his views on performance and magic as an art form.

Comparing his two Penguin lectures, I probably gained more from the first one, as in that he covered many classic Elsdon effects like Balance, his take on Heirloom and his work with the Rubiks cube. This was still a great lecture though and one you should definitely watch and enjoy - but I would recommend getting lecture 1 first.

Thanks Mark for some great material and interesting thoughts and tips!
