Zabrecky's Penguin lecture is a gem for anyone looking to take their magic further into the live
performance space. Full disclosure: my curiosity for magic currently resides inside the
spirit/bizzare room of the proverbial House of Magic... Where many of these (fantastic) lectures
focus on the method, construction of a gimmick or the subtleties of fooling, Zabrecky spends most of
his time inspiring the audience, with highly practical and relatable examples of how to turn a trick
into something more emotionally valuable and tangible. A story. A character. An artists practice. He
first performs a large chunk of his wonderfully bizarre show, which becomes a good reference point
for his talk. This is one of my all time favourite Penguin lectures, one that I will continue to
revisit. What I've learned here will undoubtedly find it's way into my stagecraft and scripting
practices. Recommended.
