I hope that in the video the author gives a credit to Aldo Colombini who did this effect 15-20 years ago.
I learned it from his dvd years ago.

Hey, Minify has a lot of advantages over previous iterations of this effect and uses a new method/gimmick. Credit is given to a number of creators that have played around with this idea but most notably Sid Lorraine who published a non-gimmicked version 95 years ago. These credits are included in the tutorial.
