I'm sorry. Mr Voodini seems like a very nice guy but I do not know what the point of this lecture was. I do not get the 5 star reviews at all. I understand it wasn't about tricks, because he is more of an esoteric performer I just found nothing of value in this. I just don't get it. I struggled to watch it in all honesty.

I'm one who gave this lecture high marks, but I completely understand why another performer wouldn't.

Obviously if you can see your character performing more "esoteric" feats of mentalism (ie: reading palms, pendulums and guided visions) it might not be your thing.

But I'd suggest his work on Cold Reading would worth reviewing. Even the "psychological illusionist" could make great use out of incorporating readings into effects.

But it's useful for others to know that this lecture might not be a fit for them.

I'm actually an esoteric performer who uses Tarot, and palmistry. Did you notice how he struggled giving readings to people in the audience using only a single Tarot card for each person, and they were from the major arcana!!! My audiences would be bored to tears with this because it didn't look credible at all. I have to stand by my statement. It's not that this performance style doesn't fit me. In fact I only work strong. I just did not find a single entertaining effect in the entire lecture. Just because you work "real" doesn't mean the effects don't have to be entertaining. He talked endlessly about what a poor magician he is? Penguin seems to struggle to find go lecturers in this genre. Maybe they could get Richard Webster one of these days.

I'm surprised then. Without talking about performance, which can be such a subjective thing, you don't think you could use the "for real" full audience drawing dupe? I thought it was simple and ingenious.

I'd love to see Richard Webster lecture too!

Best

This is where I don't understand the argument about esoteric performances. If you're really a working performer, you run into all sorts of people: fence sitters, believers, and skeptics etc. you may as well be able to work with all of these types of people. You should be prepared to demonstrate for people who ARE believers of the esoteric, you're there to give people entertainment and a major part of entertainment is playing to the crowd.

Maybe you should do a Penguin lecture then cani1? Show us all how you do it and how we can improve? I'm particularly interested in the Tarot side of things, an area which could do with more exposure

My,My,My. Lots of Kool Aid drinkers in here. Yeah, I'm wrong. Go ahead and perform ANY of these effects for PAYING audiences and please let me know how many time you get rebooked.

I\'ve used nearly all of these for paying audiences, very successfully.\r\n\r\nWhat I wouldn\'t fancy doing is performing them in front of a group of magicians - they don\'t want an indepth reading from the cards, they want to get to the secret.\r\n\r\nI thought PV handled it well.
