About Juan Tamariz

Juan Tamariz is without a doubt the single most important person in our field today. His thoughts on the art are far and away the most profoundly significant advances happening at present. I know I'll get flamed for this. No one is allowed to hold an opinion that Juan Tamariz is a bit over the top in his performances. To put it more simply while trying to be polite, Juan's performances don't float my cork. Never have, ever since I first saw him perform live in the UK many, many years ago.

His performance style (which apparently everyone in the world except for me loves) is present on the first 4 of these discs. I'm not sure I really picked up anything from these discs that isn't better covered in his book "Mnemonica." Mr. Tamariz tells us at the beginning of disc 1 that these are good, but not great tools for learning. For me, since I find it hard to sit through a performance, I fully agree with him. The book is far, far better.

There are 2 "howevers," however. The first is disc 5. Disc 5 is one-on-one tutoring, advice, details, tips for success and tips to avoid failure. Excellent disc! He explains performance considerations rather than performs them. The advice is excellent and given in congenial manner.

The second however is that Mr. Tamariz pretty much requires you to get the book (not TRULY necessary, but he constantly refers you to it for more details, similar tricks, discussion). The book is outstanding if you are into the tool that Juan and Simon advocate, and which a number of highly paid magicians use on a daily basis. I would put the book on par with Simon Aronson's "Bound to Please" and "Try the Impossible." I use Simon's approach but after years working with it, I wanted to see what Juan's version is all about. (It's different, not better, just different than Simon's).

As for the discs, well, if it wasn't for the 5th disc I would offer mine up for sale, each played once. Disc 5 sort of makes the entire purchase valuable.

My children made this DVD set a present for Christmas (bought from Penguin Magic). I could not be happier the material is fantastic and helps to bring to life, and supplement the book. I highly recommend this collection to any one interested in great card magic.

You have to buy this DVD set. If you have the book Mnemonica, this will show you Juan's incredible style of timing and spectator interaction that could not be shown in a book. He is so excited to be performing these tricks that it made me excited to learn them and perform them for others. If you don't have Mnemonica and are new to the memorized deck idea, this is the best magic purchase you could possibly make. With these tricks you can cover everything from freely named predictions to any card called for, to card to pocket to gambling routines and a lot more. The method is extremely well hidden (who would imagine you memorized an entire deck of cards) especially if you throw in false shuffles and cuts during the routines. That annoying teenager who always tells you he'll just look up how to do your tricks on youtube, won't even know where to begin with this material. And it's accessible to all even beginners or young magicians, as long as you put in the work to memorize the deck. Don't be intimidated if you can't do a faro, just set up the deck "manually" and have it in your pocket ready to go.

A memorized stack offers so much benefit for the work involved that only the laziest of magicians would pass up the opportunity to perform these miracles.

You've heard the legendary stories about the miracles that can be done with a memorized deck, so know here's your chance to learn from the King himself!

Go from the one being fooled at conventions to the one doing the fooling! And if performed for laymen, it's devastating!

Juan is like a mad genius. If you're interested in memorized deck work, and Mnemonica in particular, his DVDs are a wonderful resource. Sometimes, when you read an effect, it can be hard to imagine how it might play to an audience, particularly where procedures may seem lengthy or involved in the text. Juan will show you how they should look in performance, and you will see that they play very well to an audience when presented properly. I've never used Juan's techniques for memorizing the stack. I use a memory palace, which I believe to be superior to the methods Juan describes, but he does provide multiple memorization tools that are workable, and the stack can be learned in a day or two. If you keep at it daily, you should have it down permanently within a couple of weeks. Pair Mnemonica with a good marked deck and you will find a whole new world of possibilities. Highly recommended.

As always, Tamariz is entertaining and creates miracles. These dvds are a good complement of the book to see some a the effects performed and explained visually and to hear Tamariz talk about techniques useful with mnemonica.

Going to keep this review short but.. in a nutshell..

This is a great companion to the book Mnemonica which I would say is one of the mostnimportant books on card magic of all time.

If you are serious about card magic. Buy this and the book then get to work.

This is not for beginners and only for the dedicated. But if you put in the work, you will be able to perform real miracles with a deck of cards.
