The Lucky Stone by Luca Volpe and Alan Wong: A Memorable Twist on a Classic

The Lucky Stone offers a fresh take on a classic effect, allowing you to craft a story that your audience will remember long after the performance.

Imagine This:

You introduce a beautiful box, hinting at something special inside that holds the key to achieving the impossible. A spectator freely selects a card, which is then lost in the deck. With anticipation building, you open the box to reveal a drawstring bag containing the Lucky Stone. You explain that this enchanted stone will guide you in finding the chosen card. You spread the cards face-down on the table and invite the spectator to call "stop" at any point. As they do, you subtly move the stone on top of the cards. You announce that when the stone falls, the chosen card will be underneath.

Here Comes the Twist:

The spectator calls "stop," and you place the stone on a card. When you turn it over, it's not the chosen card! But wait...You remind them that you said their card would be "under" the stone. There, miraculously engraved on the underside of the Lucky Stone, is the value and suit of their chosen card!

The Grand Finale:

As if by magic, the face-down card transforms into the chosen card, leaving them speechless. If you wish, you can give the lucky stone to the spectator to keep as a souvenir! An organic magic memory that your audience will remember forever!

Perfect for All Settings:

The Lucky Stone is ideal for close-up and parlor performances. Its elegant presentation creates a sense of intrigue from the moment you approach the table. Luca Volpe has incorporated this routine into his close-up shows with tremendous success.

I finally got to bring this one into my gig and it has gotten some of the best reactions I have seen in a long time. Every time I have done it, the response is as strong, if not stronger, than any other trick. To be clear, you are essentially paying for a prop, not a gimmick. The prop consists of a very nice little wooden box, the stones, and a little bag for the chosen stone. The trick itself consists of two very easy moves. On a 1-5 scale of difficulty, with 1 being very easy, I'd say one move is a 1 and the other is a 2. The rest is just controlled shuffling and mixing. Sometimes I like routines where it looks like you've made a mistake but with a twist that shows you actually nailed it, and sometimes I don't. This is one where the "mistake" makes the payoff much stronger, especially when adding the kicker ending. Highly recommended.
