"Tune in, turn on, and raise your game. This is a master class by a highly experienced Wizard who knows what people like. I love everything Allan puts out."- Will Fern

"I have been a fan of Allan's magic for decades. He has the ability to take a deceptive method and make it an incredibly compelling piece of theater. You can't help but be a better magician after watching him work."- Nate Kranzo

"These are presentations that engage and extract an emotional response rather than merely play before an audience that has nothing to do but sit and watch. Allan teaches the tricks well and gives all the presentational touches that make a difference."- David Britland

"These are strong effects with quirky and theatrical presentations, and several—deviously clever—have long been favorites of mine. Allan is a clever practitioner, and his material is well worth your time."- John Bannon

"Allan has an ingenious sense of deception and his work consistently demonstrates how presentation and communication produce a deeper audience response. His work is engaging, practical, and characterized by a creative imagination and intelligent thought. There are routines here you will do. I know I will."- Bob Fitch

What will he teach?

In this extended teaching session, magician and NY Times bestselling author Allan Zola Kronzek shares seven of his most his most memorable creations, along with the along with the performance philosophy that shaped them. Among the topics explored are "drawing in" versus "freaking out;" the importance of "play," in the performer/audience dynamic; theatrical versus casual presentations, creating mystery through clarity, and why the best time to perform sleights is when no one is looking. Like Allan's previous releases through Penguin, this is polished, audience-engaging performance material you will use.

Playing with the Jokers- A lesson in how to quickly disarm a group of strangers who couldn't care less about magic and turn them into your co-conspirators. It's a three-phase card routine, yes, but point is not the tricks but engagement that comes from them.

The Mirror- Doubles and doppelgangers inhabit the background of this Do-As-I-Do staging. The method is well known, but the presentation is transformative. A resonate, after-dinner or parlor mystery.

True Romance- A couple is invited to look into each other's eyes and discover the precise moment when synchronicity, intuition, or some deep, soulful connection allows them to miraculously find each other's selected cards. The ensuing level of astonishment is as deep as it is gratifying.

Strange Attraction- A perfect amusement for those strolling situations when guests have drinks and snacks in hand. Two spectators peek at random cards. A third, points to any card in the deck, and the selections instantly materialize on either side. It's a quick "what just happened?" moment, using an easy-to-do and little-known sleight.

Destiny, Chance, and Free Will- Critic Jamy Ian Swiss called this showpiece "A conjuring and theatrical marvel." A philosophical mystery in which the featured participant shares his or her views on the title topics, leading to a bewildering and unsettling finale. A card location unlike any other.

The Placebo Effect- "Believing is seeing" is the premise of this reimagining of The Knowledgeable Cards, from Card College V. It’s a four-Ace routine with a kicker ending that feels like a hallucination.

Drobina Redone- Allan’s take on Frank Drobina’s coin routine from Bobo’s Coin Magic, minus the clutter and confusion that made many readers pass over this hidden gem. Performed with coins that people actually carry—pennies or dimes—this is the perfect anytime, anywhere, routine for an audience of kids and adults.

Who is he?

Allan Zola Kronzek is a NY Times bestselling author, educator, and sleight-of-hand artist. His innovative programs—a blend of conjuring, science, history and art—have been featured in schools, colleges, and libraries throughout the Northeast. He is the author of six magic-centric books, including The Secrets of Alkazar, a highly regarded introduction to magic, Artful Deceptions, a collection of impromptu card magic, 52 Ways to Cheat at Poker, and most recently, Grandpa Magic, a treasury of tricks and stunts designed to make grandpa the coolest guy on the block. His original material has appeared in Genii, MUM, Vanish, The Linking Ring, Apocalypse, and Cricket Magazine.

As a strolling and close-up performer, he regularly performs for the rich and famous in the fashionable Hamptons, where he lives, unfashionably, with his wife, the artist Ruby Jackson. Several of his original card routines are performed by magicians around the world.

I am very glad I bought this!
A lot of these routines are from Allans best selling book
'Artful Deceptions' but seeing them come to life was a great lesson in mis-direction for me.
If you like whimsical 'patter' you will find value in what Allan says as he performs each piece.
'The Placebo effect' is a great trick to do when you have the 4 aces on the table. And the 'Drobina redone' is a very nice coins across. Both routines are not in the book.
With the great Eugene Burger no longer with us it is nice to have lectures like this where the performer has clearly thought about what he is going to say.Of course I would love to see an Allan Kronzek part 2!

Allan presents a number of items from his book Artful Deceptions and additional material all of which is powerful and commercial. The insights during his discussions with Eric are pure gold. Don’t buy it ….. I want to keep this to myself!

Just got done watching the whole video and came away with some great material that I cant wait to try on friends and family. I especially liked the Placebo effect but all the routines are worth learning. While I am somewhat familiar with the mechanics of the Top Change I have never used it. This Lecture has definitely given me the incentive to put in some real practice associated with this sleight and to put it to use. Alan uses this sleight quite extensively during these effects. The structure of the effects are well thought out and provide perfect cover and misdirection when performing the change as well as any of the other sleights.

Alan thank you for this lecture !!!!!

Pick it up and go Report this review

Really, pick this up and go. I think most of the stuff here is pretty easy and can be picked up and within a few hours, you can do this.

The best part of this lecture is showing how easily doesn't mean good but the opposite. these routines hit hard and fast, so you can't go wrong with picking this up.

Also, Allan's teaching is really good and Erik's comment completes this very well. I had a blast!

Love The Book, and the Man Report this review

I first read Artful Deceptions, then I saw Allan perform two of these routines at a convention and I became a lifelong fan.

His charm, whimsy, and sincerity comes through the screen. The effects are workers, and not necessarily "on screen" friendly but that doesn't matter. This is material designed for the real world, not on camera.

You get to see his timing, eye contact, and delivery.

It is a shorter lecture, but you're getting lots of solid useful material. Much better than other lectures that ramble about NOTHING for twice as long.

If you do walk around card magic, this is a must. There's some smart thinking you will be able to apply to other routines you do, and you'll definitely come away with some new effects.

Every trick is one you can start performing right now Report this review

One of the first tricks I learned was Allan Kronzek's "Think of One" and I absolutely love it, so I was super excited when I saw Mr. Kronzek was doing a Penguin Live lecture. Every single trick he teaches in this lecture is something you can start doing right away.

My favorites from this lecture:

True Romance is such a great trick to do at small social gatherings or just when hanging out with some friends.

The Mirror is such a simple trick but the storytelling and performance really make it play so much bigger than it is.

Destiny, Chance, and Free Will is a great one that builds and builds until you smash your spectators with a double reveal that will blow them away.

I highly recommend this lecture to anyone that loves card magic or has enjoyed any of Mr. Kronzek's other tricks. you won't be disappointed.

What a wonderful lecture. Alan is a master of his field and has excellent teaching skills. His attitude of not pushing himself into the foreground and letting the spectator experience magic is unique. I just have to recommend this lecture. Some tricks require certain sleigt of hand, others are easy to learn. I would be very happy about a second lecture.

What really counts Report this review

After reading his beautiful book "Artful Deceptions" I want to see this man perform and it was as amazing as his book. Not the bones of the tricks but the magic in his approach. Friendly, soft and in the background. All the magic and magic feelings belong to the participants woven in a meaningful concept with theatrical handling. The magical moment is not forced but comes out of itself. Really wonderful!
