"One of the greatest thought readers of our time." -Uri Geller

"How the bloody hell did you do that?" -Simon Cowell

"There's a very short list of creators/performers in the magic community that I will sit up and pay close attention to when they speak. Sometimes they speak through their commercial releases and if I'm lucky enough to be their friends, I get to hear from them directly! Colin Mcleod is at the top of that list. If you get the chance to hear, see or read anything from Colin you WILL walk away with a fresh innovative perspective. I guarantee it." -Bill Abbott

"One of the most brilliant and creative thinkers in mentalism alive today. His mind should be bronzed and worshiped by any mentalist seeking guidance." -Marc Salem

“Colin McLeod has interesting, creative and fun ideas about what mentalism can be, where it can go and how it should be presented. He devises powerful, head-scratching mysteries that take the entertainment value all the way up to 11, all of which he performs well and explains clearly without taking forever to do so. If there’s something else to want from a mentalism lecture, I don’t know what it is. Colin has a terrible haircut and an accent no-one can understand, but apart from that both he and his lectures are a treat. Watch, enjoy, learn and prepare to be fooled in the nicest possible way by a mind so sharp you could slice rocks with it.” –Ian Rowland

"Colin Mcleod is AMAZING! He creates wonderful audience engaging plots with ingenious methods and if that was not enough he's also a powerful and dynamic performer. If you get the chance to see him in action make sure you do." -Marc Paul

"Colin McLeod IS the future of mentalism. Some in our field are superb performers, others are immensely creative. Colin McLeod is both. And that sets him apart from just about everyone." -Ken Weber

"I have said it once and I will say it over and over, I am a big fan of Colins. His work is amazing. In fact he is a rising star in my book. He is the next Derren Brown." -Neal Scryer

"As honoured as I am that some of my greatest mentors have been kind enough to praise me so highly, I think you should come along and make up your own mind ..." -Colin McLeod

The Penguin Lectures are just about the best thing to happen to magic in the past decade, but this is sadly one of the weaker entries in the series.
Colin's performance is a mixture of store bought tricks and rather heavy handed adjustments to existing methods. The set starts badly with a rather transparent 50/50 guessing game and goes downhill from there. Colin works as a motivational speaker for corporations and he carries something of that aura with him - not necessarily a positive for a mystery performer. On the plus side, the lecture is long and is value for money if you are already a fan. But those looking for more dynamic, less stolid work would be better looking at the Peter Turner lecture. Those after more traditional mentalism should check out the Osterlind lecture. Colin's work sits rather uncomfortably in a no-man's land in the middle.

As a beginner in mentalism, a variety of techniques were taught. Not only does he teach strong effects in detail, he explains his process as a performer.

Effects taught include:
Equivoque - two bags, one contains broken glass
Q & A - requires a gimmick
bookless booktest - requires a gimmick, this routine is performed on fool us
which hand - requires gimmick, ends with 3 pieces of information "provided by t he audience"
These effects are all intertwined in his opening routine for a specific reason.

A prediction using gum, a ring & a coin - uses same gimmick as his which hand routine.

7 card prediction - a spectator picks 7 random cards, multiple spectators can think of different cards & Colin divines each one

Another equivoque trick - one spectator draws a card, the other thinks of a card through a process of elimination & the two card match

Think of a card - Colin spreads through the deck & the spectator thinks of any card, the spectator does the same & Colin thinks of a card, both Colin & the spectator pull out the card they think the other is thinking of & both are correct, uses a gimmick

Finally a close up trick - a billet is passed around a table, spectators write 3 pieces of information on the billet (name, place, drawing). then on another billet Colin does the same. Colin asks the spectators to guess what he wrote down with varying accuracy (can be improved with psychological forces for 100% accuracy). Colin then guesses with 100% accuracy what the spectators wrote down.

Overall this lecture was packed with a lot of great mentalism with many different methods. The downside is his routine is sleightly gimmick heavy with many effects using, sometimes an expensive, gimmick.
However, a lot of value in this lecture can also be found in his explanation of his performance, not the methods but things such as the order of effects, overcoming mistakes, & promoting other great mentalist crediting their influence on his effects & guiding you to look at other great mentalism.

A superb lecture! Report this review

This was a fabulous 4 hour lecture.

Colin gave great advice and structured his demonstration on how to structure an act, whether it be for stage, parlor, or impromptu close-up.

We got to see him perform his Facade version of the Bookless Book Test, and he gave a great close-up version of
a close-up Q&A act. With some personalization for your own character, this is really packs small - plays huge.

I also loved his change in presentation approach of Sneak Thief. This made perfect sense and is more in line with his demonstrated powers.

At the end Colin demonstrates a variation of his Furtive Switch (that was on his Opening Minds DVD) routine. This was a thing of beauty. With a small group of people, 2 business cards and a pen, Colin demonstrates how to send thoughts to 3 people, and then he reads the minds of those 3 people. There is justification for the writing and the necessary action. Because everyone was 'in on' the thoughts to be read, everyone is invested in the outcome. The business card handling looks so clean. There's no where for the spectator to go on how he does this.

Colin's emphasis is how you can take elements we've seen before and modify them to make your material unique from anyone else.

There is much more in these 4 hours than that - but those were the biggest points I got out of it. This was a fantastic lecture!

Don't think, just buy it! Report this review

I bought this late last night, watched more than half already and think its fantastic.

The effects so far all have some great thinking behind them and one "calling idea" for a prediction effect that I think is worth the price of the download alone.

The added touches to the "bookless book test" has really made me want to perform this routine in my shows.

One of the things that stand out to me, is Colin's honesty. I feel that everything he does, says he does, says he doesn't do and why he doesn't do it is coming from a very honest place. No B***s**t, no pipe dreams.

Well that it for now, typing this on a London bus is making me feel awfully sick but I just wanted to share how excited I am about this Lecture.

Thanks for sharing such great ideas Colin.

Mentalism 101 Report this review

Colin touches many areas of mentalism in this 3 hour plus lecture.

This is the biggest bang for your buck that I have seen on penguin website.

I have seen Colin lecture before but he gives up some gems on this lecture.
How a mentalist should dress was one of the subjects I liked the best first impact can be key. The ideas and humor between Colin and (Patrick) are great and helped add much humor to this lecture. I recommend this highly to other mentalist. Thinking for the new generation with great twist on the classics.

I did see this. In response to some of the comments out there, yea it didn't seem like he went through that many affects. He belabors points as well. Someone else said it would cost 400 to do these effects. I dunno know about that but I did spend $50 to make one of his effects, and it is a stunner! This one effect crosses the line where now people really do think you can read minds. And that is what makes this lecture such a great one. This one effect is my best effect. People will believe you are reading their minds.

Don't think about it, just buy it! Don't be stoopid!

A good mixture of stage and close-up mentalism Report this review

Although the description days 2 hours this lecture rules about 3 3/4 hours, the last hour spent answers questions. If you're a stage or close-up magicians you'll appreciate Colin's out-of-the-box thinking, and I'll guarantee you'll find something in this lecture that love.

Excellent! Report this review

If you are into mentalism, you will likely enjoy Colin's lecture and get a lot of useful effects out of it. In general, I like Colin's approach and presentation. I also like the way he handles the situation when things go wrong. He works with it! As many performers know, things go wrong fairly often. If you're a mentalist, this is okay. Conventional wisdom holds that mentalist should miss occasionally to make their act more believable. That's probably true, but I find that I don't have to build in misses. They find a way of occurring without my help. This lecture is a bargain if you get it as part of the Choose 5 for $99, as I did.
