Having variety in the kind of magic you perform naturally ensures your audience will enjoy your show with their undivided attention.

This lesson contains a wide assortment of tricks originally designed to use silk handkerchiefs, but of course, I've breathed new life into them by adding my presentational angles, creating brand-new methods, and in some cases, altering the props entirely to make use of more contemporary articles.

I begin with a seemingly simple game, combining tug-of-war and capture the flag with a magical series of penetrations making both players look like pros.

Then, I teach a trick that's knot magic ending in a tie. By that I mean, it begins with a knot tied in a tie and ends with the knot not where the knot was.

Continuing to turn the tide, I demonstrate the tremendous power of my laundry detergent to capture lost valuables. Don't believe me?... just watch.

Then, I perform (for a dubious duo) an ancient (and seldom seen) ceremony I recently invented, allowing the happy couple to really tie the knot.

Next, I re-examine the method of one of Tarbell's own creations, add some nice new touches, discovering how to make it both more elegant and deceptive.

But I really go all out on the next trick by replacing the silk with sugar, resulting in one of the sweetest and most perplexing transpositions ever seen.

Then, I teach you the simplest, most direct, and sure-fire way to turn many individual colored handkerchiefs into one large multi-colored masterpiece.

And I take on the most-famous American Flag blendo, by revamping the method and motivating the transformation with a lengendary piece of folklore.

After that, things get a bit crazy with fire, ribbons, and (of course) pirates as I teach you a flashy opening incorporating my brand new flag production.

Speaking of brand new, I give the world premiere of my super-clean version of knife through coat, finally eliminating that pesky piece of paper.

And last but not least, my cat, Mr. Fluffy Pants, gets into the act... or at least, his picture does, and it proves to be quite indestructible.

Not only will you learn novel handkerchief magic in this lesson, you'll see how I apply the core concepts to a wide variety of more modern presentations.

Dan delivers in this modernized lesson! This lesson embodies exactly what I love about the Tarbell series, Dan brings his new, original, and in some cases unusual presentations to this lesson. This lesson acts as a great look at how silk and handkerchief magic can be updated and presented to modern audiences. Dan explores over 15 different effects in this lesson. One of Dan’s opening effects the Tarbell Hat and Silk Combination is a pleasant opener and would be great for the magician looking to pack flat and still create entertaining magic. Tarbell's Silks and Aces is given a facelift as Dan replaces the Silk with sugar and boy is it a sweet trick, as four kings and sugar perform an astonishing transposition. Additionally, Dan’s pirate take on the Mystic Ribbons and flag production is great and I can’t wait to see the second part of his presentation in the next lesson. In my opinion, the best trick in the lesson is, The Perfection Flag Trick. Dan took this impractical effect, which I thought would be impossible to bring to life, and made it into a well scripted theatrical flag production which can act as the perfect closing effect for your show.

As always, Dan is an entertaining and fun teacher and he brings each effect to life in a lesson the pops off the page. So if you’re looking to add a little verity to your show by adding color, excitement, flash and spectacle this lesson may be for you.

I thought this lesson was fantastic! There's one routine that Dan used to open his show that I feel was worth the price alone since i've been looking for a routine like it! If your looking for parlour or stage magic that uses silks this is the lesson to get!

Makes me want to use "silks" Report this review

Dan updates methods (those necessary) and presentations to make this a much better than expected lesson.

The three standouts are the original "blendo" with a slight, but useful, adjustment to the method; a trick with a large sugar bottle (the kind from a diner), and production of a pirate flag (the method of which is great to know and would have many other applications).

There is still even more. At the start he shows a couple of effects where a tied silk jumps to you from another silk held by a spectator, then a similar effect in reverse.

Also, there are a couple of good routines using neckties as updates to silks.

Interesting presentations with handkerchiefs where Dan has updated many of the routines to use other materials such as ties, flags, paper, and even photos. Great material!

I have owned the Tarbell books for 30 years. I have seen the ads, but this was the first lesson that I have purchased. I am impressed with the amount of work that Mr. Harlan has put into this. To think that he has done this for the entire set is mind boggling.
I enjoyed his take on the tricks. His descriptions and hints are invaluable. I have been inspired to pull the books out again and come up with my own routines. Definitely worth the price.
