While practicing this effect I noted two things when I hit the cell phone lock button, it makes a audible ping sound and the screen goes dark. This of course could make the point when you lock the screen visible to an observant participant.(Especially in a low light situation. Am I missing something or doing it incorrectly. Im not a tech person so does anyone have and ideas or suggestions?

So first you have to tell the spectator to put their phone on silent????

I have the same issue in low light environment: when the specator shall scroll through the list with the phone face down people see the screen is dark because normally the hand would be lighted by the phone.
Tried to solve it by hitting the lock button twice than the screen is still on

To get the best results for this effect, its best to make sure the phone is on silent, "So you can't hear anything" and the phone is parallel to the floor and nothing is directly below it, "so you can't see anything." This is what I've found in my performances and it works every time!
