Does it have to be a pen? How about a fork or something else?

You'd have to experiment but it could work for other objects. A normal pencil could work, most pens would work as well. Sharpies are tapered, which helps in the routine though it's not absolutely necessary. As far as silverware goes, I'm sure you could find a fork that this would work with but some forks will pose very specific challenges.
