The reviewers said the square case is solid wood, not plastic, but is the inserted block solid wood? I've seen these with folded-up cardboard and think cardboard would not wear well.

It's a solid wood building block. The box is also solid wood.

I guess you didn't see the video the boxes made of wood the black is made of wood that's why they're selling it for 30 bucks and not five because it's not plastic
