can the deck be examined after the reveal? Best way to ditch the gimmick or is this too difficult?

No. But if you have routined this correctly, there is no heat on the deck. That is, this should not be used as a stand alone effect, but only after a sequence using an ungaffed deck that the spectators have handled. For more information, please see the Daryl LIVE lecture.
