If you love the trailer, you'll love the effect. It works exactly like the video.
What
you're really paying for is the idea, the (short) script, the (low-budget) DVD, and the performance
rights (although not on TV, at the Magic Castle, or in any "magic related venue"). You're paying
for intellectual property.
The bad news is that you'll need to buy about $50 of arts and
crafts supplies and spend an hour or two putting them together. The good news is that you only have
to do this once, and the supplies are all readily available from Amazon, Michael's, etc. The setup
is not difficult at all -- it's just a lot of careful cutting and gluing while pausing and rewinding
the DVD a lot. Once it's all put together, the reset only takes about 30 seconds between
performances (but must be done privately).
$165 and I have to build it! Wow, thank God you wrote your review. You just saved me some serious frustration.
I don't care if I like the trick, it's just an insult to sell something at this price and not have it built and I have to go buy stuff!!
@E_tothe_X, you just have a different premise about what you're paying for. As I said, the cost is for the idea and not the materials. And without giving away the method, suffice it to say that since you're drawing on a pad repeatedly and tearing off pages, if you didn't make it yourself out of a real pad you'd wind up having to constantly order some sort of refills. Making it yourself means you're in complete control.
