I have only played with this prop for a few minutes, so take that into account when reading my
review.
This is certainly a startling trick. Don't worry, it is NOT one of those flashy
tricks that only works well in virtual performance. You can use this in real shows. While not cheap,
I can understand the price because these are hand made.
Two things are important to know
before purchasing:
First, and most importantly, you MUST be wearing an all-black shirt. So
if you are wearing a black shirt, this is actually quite visually amazing. It passes the "wow" test
while practicing in the mirror.
Second, you cannot use just any card. It comes with a card
already prepared and works right out of the box.
Also, this is self-contained (i.e., no
pulls). It is easy to do, but it will take a little practice so that your hands look natural. It
"packs small and plays big," just like in the video.
As far as lighting, I wouldn't do it
outside on a sunny day, but you don't need low light, either. It looked good when I tried it indoors
in a very well-lit room. I'd say this is best for parlor/platform/stage. I was four feet from the
mirror while practicing and it looked great. That doubles to 8 feet visually. I didn't try it
closer, so I can't say whether you can use this close up (they only mentioned stage and virtual in
their ad copy).
The method is very clever. I did not anticipate it.
With all
these positives, why only four stars? For a few reasons.
First, as mentioned I only played
with it for a few minutes and it already broke. The online video shows you how to fix it. Second,
related to the first, is that there is something very specific you need to fix it. While you can see
what that something is, they don’t tell you the specific type of this specific “something” (no
English instructions for the fixing part of the video). They should have included a supply of that
special something, because it may not be a household item for most magicians. Third, the
instructions on how to perform it is literally only one minute long. I had to play it back multiple
times to see how to position my fingers and perform it properly.
By the way, with a little
ingenuity and practice, even in a “broken” state, it is possible to perform this. It also passes the
"wow" mirror test.
Based on all these issues, I almost went with 3 stars, but it's too
visually startling and clever for a 3 star review.
The bottom line is that if you 1) wear a
black shirt when you perform, 2) perform with the audience 8 feet or more away from you, and 3)
don’t mind the simple arts and crafts needed to fix it if it breaks, then I’d say this is a great
quick visually startling effect you should consider. I’m actually glad I purchased this.
