The Unexpected DVD set from Marc Spelmann and Pater Nardi is great for mentalist who want to know a
few impromptu effects in case they are ever asked to do something and they are unprepared. With that
being said, these effects aren't supposed to be killer routines. They are supposed to just be there
as a back up in case you need them. Because of this, these routines are not particularly strong, but
there was one routine in particular that I really liked.
1. Perfect ESP
I've always
hated using ESP cards in routines because I felt they warranted suspicion. But I really liked this
routine. The spectator mixes up two packets of ESP cards. She keeps one pack, and you get the other.
Then one at a time, he or she takes a card and puts it on the table. The spectator then sends that
design to you and you are able to receive that design and put down the same design from your pack.
There are no marked cards in this routine, and you could even put down the card BEFORE the spectator
but that wouldn't make much sense with the routine's presentation. I really like this effect, and I
now have a stack of business cards with ESP symbols on them, which I carry around in my wallet so I
am always prepared to do something at a moment's notice.
